Question for bowyers and custom bow buyers
« on: September 05, 2012, 04:29:00 PM »
If you where ordering a bow from a bowyer with over 20 years experience and referenced a Bear Take Down Green Stripe and they said they did not know what you are talking about would you have a concern ?

Not necessarily.  Although many folks that are really "in" to trad archery know what you are referencing, plenty would not.  Some folks just aren't into Bears and keeping up on whats hot and wouldn't know (or care) if green stripe meant 1962 or 1982.  Craftsmen, artist types are often of the beaten path a bit and might not be plugged into the web or the mainstream trad community.  That is not necessarily a bad thing.

He may do great work and produce fine bows.

I don't know what one is, and I've been shooting trad for about 12 yrs now, so, no, it wouldn't really concern me.

I never was that crazy about Bear takedowns, so I didn't pay much attention to the different versions. Same thing with lots of cars. I have been driving cars for 45 years, and have shot trad bows for 55 years, but I never even heard of a Green Stripe and don't know anything about many cars. I do have 4 dozen trad bows, and not a single one of them is a Bear. All but a couple are custom bows. It's kinda what a fella is into that holds his interest. Obviously, that bowyer is not into Bear bows.

Allen answered it about as good as it can be answered.  If we were all Bear fans, no one would be able to afford them

Surprised by the answers?

I agree with the others.  IMHO Not a big deal.  He is probably busy in the shop building bows and not on archery forums.

It sounds if you already have your doubts.  If you have doubts at this stage go elsewhere.

I think the reference that "they" did not know what he was talking about.  It wouldn't bother me at all.

My favorite longbow is made from a gent in NC who doesn't have an email address or internet access. Not really concerned with other bow designs, just builds what he knows...

I appreciate someone not "chasing" the copy cat design as is common now a days.

But if he was not familiar with a Howatt Hunter I might have a concern.

I've been shooting nothing but traditional bows for 25 years and don't know for sure. I am not a big fan of Bear takedowns and am not up on the different configurations.

I wouldn't worry about it too much if a bowyer doesn't know either.

No
all the custom bowyers I work with are head and shoulders above Bear Bows - none of us care about a green stripe. I appreciate Fred Bears contribution but bear bows are production bows sold by a compound bow company.

Suprised...maybe, concerned..no

I would be more intersted in the reputation of him and his bows...since thats what you'll be buying.
