Horn Bow
« on: September 06, 2012, 10:56:00 PM »
Just got my new horn  bow made for me by my good friend Mr Ed Scott and Carl Peterson. Carl has gone to Ed's class to learn how to make horn bows and they made this one for me to take on my moose hunt in Alberta next week. The bow is made from Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep horn and sinew only. The bow is 50'' and 54 @ 24 and will send an arrow faster than any bow I have ever shot.

I can get it back to 25 and its around 57 lbs and thats about all it wants to go being that short. I draw 26 so its just a little different that I shoot all the time.

Awesome! That's a beautiful bow!

I've been researching horn sheepeaters online recently... have you guys seen Tom Lucas' bows? If you are interested in sheepeaters, the youtube video of him giving a lecture about his homemade sheepeater bows at some museum in the Dakotas is a must see!

I will say this about the bow, since Ed & I made it, horn is a most tempermental material to work. It behaves like no wood and develops a flat or hing for no apparrent reason. I did the final tillering at Mike's so that I wouldn't screw up the weight or tiller(hopefully). The thing switched sides with every set of scrapes. I finally got the thing set and "STABLE."  I hope Mike has a great hunt and kills a monster.   :deadhorse:   Close to a dead moose as I had handy.

Might add that the thing started at about 68# after a little cure, 2wks. I told Mike that it might be next spring before it was ready for final tillering. "WE got it done!!"

Here is the link I referenced earlier... I can't imagine fully appreciating Mike Yancey's bow without knowing what his friends went through to make it! These bighorn sheep bows seem to require a lot more than effort/energy/love than a wood bow!
Tom Lucas seems like an amazing guy not to mention an exceptional student of sheepeater culture. Here is an excerpt from a lecture of his about his sheephorn bows:

How about some close ups?

Mr.Scotts bows are always amazing.

Being in the same state as he, I aught to take a class from him...
