Licking Branch Height
« on: September 08, 2012, 08:42:00 PM »
I've been setting up some mock scrapes and using some of "smokey's"  orbital lure on an overhanging branch.  What is the best height to try and have the licking branch at.

Depending on your height I would say chest to nose would be a good start.

I have seen them anywhere from 4-7 feet, with 5-6 feet being most common. If there are any natural scrapes close by, try and mimic those. Use the same size and type of trees with the about the same height licking branch. Try to make them look as natural as possible. Best of luck.
Plant a fruit or nut tree today, and have good hunting tomorrow.

I second 5-6 feet.  But I had a buck come in last year and make a scrape and the licking branch he worked over the scrape, he had to stand on his hind legs to reach it.  Must have been 8 feet or more up.

i put it at my chest. deer are not tall. and they dont normally work them standing on there hind legs. my buddy raises deer. has about 40-50 of em and it amazes me when i walk in and hang out with em how short they are. look so big when hunting. but when your petting one they are relatively small. wear gloves!

We use trappers stakes and paracord to bend trees over. Our best results have been in the 4-5 foot range.
