Tab or Glove?
« on: September 10, 2012, 09:38:00 PM »
I was wondering what everyone prefers- tab or glove..

I've been shooting recurves since January and have always shot wth a glove (have the calouses to show for my short 52" IA Mohawk). However, I now have a longbow and find it easier to get the string off my fingers with a hand fashioned tab I made from some latigo leather.

In relation to this, I also watched Terry Green's shooting form videos and found that I have a bit of a knack for a quicker release. Enlightening.

Prefer glove.  Have shot recurves and longbows that way for 45 years.  In fairness I have tried using tabs, but I do not get as consistent release as I do with the glove.  Love my Damascus glove, by the way!

I prefer a glove. I have tried a tab and it was ok for me. I liked my American Leathers bigshot glove better. Until I got the American Leathers Bigshot Crossover glove. Really like the way it feels.

Started with tabs, migrated to gloves, and now am back with tabs.  It's personal preference.  I think I get a bit of a cleaner release with a cordovan tab. Heck, I may be shooting a glove next week!

Tab.  I shoot better with tabs than I did with gloves or finger stalls.

I am a newbie to trad gear and I get a lot better accuracy when using a glove. But I will be trying a tab again as I get more experience I want to give it another try.

I've found that with a glove, deerskin or NEET leather, the finger tips seem to 'pile' up and after a while, my fingers are just sore. This causes me to try to find a new line on my fingers, whether a deep hook as Ron LaClair suggests, or more of a narrow grip on the pads of my finger tips like Mr. Welch. Either way, the result for me is compromised form in draw. The latigo leather I made my tab from is thick and provides awesome finger protection and I can shoot for hours without any sting in my finger tips.

What kind of gloves are there that have super stiff leather fingertip coverage?

rwbowman, the Black Widow PDQ superglove with the cordovan overlays on the tips fits the bill.  It's real stiff when you first get it and takes some break in time, but your fingers won't get sore.

Dura glove for me. I was lucky enough to get the last three large size before they went out of stock.

I went from glove to tab and have stayed with the tab.

I just got a side of finished leather to make some Halloween costume adornments with and I think I will make a tab or two out of it as well and give it another go round.

Im a glove shooter and will stay that way Im sure.  Still in search of that perfect glove.

I do highly recommend the Bearpaw Speed Glove sold by Kustom King.

Toelke fuzzy tab, fuzzy side on the string.  Most consistent release I have found.  Each of us gets to decide for ourselves and that's one of the things that makes trad shooting great.
Best of Luck!

I like a tab, just personal preference, however I worry about misplacing it, dropping it, losing it on the way to my stand etc.  I carry an extra broken in tab but it's just one of those things I wouldn't worry about as much if I was shooting with a glove, maybe I'll switch!
