fletchlac...duco... and carbon shafts?

i was told that duco would not work on the fletchlac products and it seems the fletchlac doesnt stick as well as id like to barre carbon shafts!

will fletch lac stick better to finished carbon shafts (ie. goldtip trads)?

could i put minwax polycrylic gloss on the bareshaft...then crown dip so it will stick.... then polycrylic over the cresting so the duco will work?

any help will be appreciated

I use goat tuff glue on non crested carbon shafts. If I use crset wraps then I use fletch tite platinum.

I have been dipping and cresting carbons since they first came out years ago.  we did this for our customers.  Always used fletch-lac products with no problems ever.  the preb is very inportent. light sanding, acetone, then dip. then use fletch tite glue platinum......Mark

Works on every type shaft....

I use Fletch-Lac quite often on bare black carbon shafts (Gold Tips).  The secret to fantastic adhesion is to properly prep.  I lightly go over the entire area to be dipped with some fine steel wool.  Then I put them in Bohning SSR solution for 7 minutes, followed by a hot water rinse (don't touch the shaft area that you are going to crest with anything but the water at this point).  Let them air dry.  Then I dip in Fletchlac that has been thinned properly (directions / opinions on this subject vary - but my best results are with Fletch-Lac that goes from "solid stream" to "slow drip" in about 30 seconds.).  In that 30 seconds, I am rotating the shaft between my thumb and index finger, looking closely for any tiny bubbles, and popping any that I may find with the tip of a straight razor blade held in my other hand.  I do this quickly and lightly.  Then I hang to dry for 24 hours.  The next day, I dip again - no prep necessary - just don't touch the first dip at all.  Dry for 24 hours.  Then I will crest with Bohning lacquer and fletch using either Fletch-Tite Platinum for vanes, or Fletch-Tape.  No matter what - I use Bohning with Bohning, and get fantastic results every time.  I use dip, cresting paint, glue, tape, and even the thinner - all Bohning, and I never have a problem, and the results always come out perfect.

I've tried various products, and they don't work as well.  A friend has noted that thinning Bohning dip with Acetone makes a Dull finish instead of bright.  Duco doesn't stick well to it.  Neither do other brands of cresting paint.  So I stick with what works - all Bohning.

I would think that you could use the Minwax products and get the results you want with the Duco, as long as your crown dip is not Fletch Lac.

the reason i ask is because i thought i did enough reseach before the splurge and.... well not enough

got all this fletchlac crest paint and crown paint and 2 tubes of duco

just would like to be able to use most of the stuff i bought... and like now because im not patient enough to wait for another order

i sanded the shafts with steel wool and cleaned shafts with the ssr cleaner but it seems like  if i scatched hard enough it would peel up and i was  thinking that over time it would rub off from the shelf during the shot

has anyone diped fletchlac and mixed testors and bohnings crest paint with good results and what about putting minwax polycrylic over testors?

Walmart usually has Fletch Lac cement for around $3. I would think that you would have no problems with poly over Testors.

I am a Sworn Saunders NPV Fletching Glue Patron. No Run, No Smearing, and I have Crowned Several Dozen Arrows, and didnt have a Bit of Trouble!!

I use Bohning tape for my carbons and alums.  Amazing stuff, super strong and instant fletching.  I'd never use anything else for non-woodie fletching.

Yep, I know - but for me, it's an ancient aesthetic thing about using glue to bond feathers to wood.   :D

Seeing how we're talking about glue and carbons.
Got my first set of carbon shafts recently with the inserts already installed. I need to add weight. Question, what is the best way to remove the insert with out doing damage to the shaft?

Someone sugested a drill bit about a little smaller then the size of inside of the shaft. Place bit in shaft and shake from side to side or up and down until insert comes out.

Or you could just buy heaver points. Alan
