Limb Tip Glue?
«
on:
October 02, 2012, 04:24:00 PM »
I'm refinishing a 1956 Bear Kodiak Special that I bought on ****. modern limb tip overlay material came with the bow. What glue is best for gluing the overlay material on? Loctite 416? Gorilla Glue? Something else?
Thanks!

I have used the Kwik-it "blue" for adding tip overlays on a couple of bow blanks I've done.I got it at 3Rivers.They have been on them for several years now and haven't had any problems with them,I shoot a FF type string!

I'll second Kwik-it.
I've used in on all the bows I've made.

Mike... I'm with you on the epoxy. A good super glue is the way to go. Like everything else surface prep is the key.
I like to lightly sand the two surfaces that will be glued then apply an even coat of the thin glue and let dry.
When dry I lightly sand again to insure smooth surfaces. Apply more glue and LIGHTLY clamp.
I use Hot Stuff CYA and think it's tops, but the Loctite 416 will work great Jerry.

Thanks for the tips (no pun intended)! As soon as the weather turns bad I'm ready to go.

Smooth On if you can get a bowyer to give you a little. You will have more working time and it will cure at room temperature in 1-2 days depending on temperature and dryness of the air. Also if you don't have a good fit, it has better gap filling properties. The argument can be made that super glue is "stong enough" as many use it. But the argument cannot be made that super glue bonds as tough as Smooth On. If it was people would be glueing risers up with it. My two cents. Chad

Working time and surface prep is the most important consideration, if your doing only one. If you use any of the super-glues, refrigerate the remaining glue after opening, or it won't last. I agree with Chad, Smooth-ON is better, it cures slower but is stronger. The manufacture's have done testing and their specifications will show the difference.

i've seen that people are repairing risers with CA-most of which were origanally bonded with smooth-on--also all of the technical data sheets that i found list the two adhesives as close as #200 tensile strength-with some property advantages going to CA including set time and near o% shrinkage--why not glue up risers with it?-ive seen risers glued up with carpenters glue on this site--the guy wants to glue some tips on an old bow--IMO impact resistant CA is good advice

Gorilla Blue top CA... Kirk uses this for his tips as do I. I have bows with way over 1000 shots through them and never a problem. Surface prep is important, prolly as if not more important than the glue used IMHO. Also, the Gorilla BLue top gives you a bit more time to set it before it cures... not nearly as fast as plain old runny super glue.
