Well it hasn't rained all summer and sure enough when its time to head to the woods the skies open up. Wasn't stopping me tho. Went out yesterday and had a flcok of turkeys come in behind me on the wet leaves. I loosed an arrow from a sitting position and missed. Was a much more succesful opening day than last year, at least I had arrows in my quiver at the end of the day this year! Even with the opener miss on the turkey my attitude was still very positive and I was looking forward to another sit this after noon. So I packed up my Lone Wolf hang on and headed to a small corner pinch point that has had alot of sign and activity on my trail cam. Without a whole lot of effort and time I had my stand in the tree and was safely hooked up with bow in hand. I could have swore the radar showed absolutely nothing on it for the afternoon except for clouds.... but the mist turned to drizzle and the drizzle to rain. I held my ground and after awhile the rain let up and I noticed the squirrels were back out working away trying to beat mother natures clock. I figured this was a good sign. I put a little tension on the string more than half a dozen times on this little gray squirrel but everytime I got close to start my routine he would scamper away. He knew better than I that more than his fuzzy tail would hang on my meat pole before nights end. At about quarter till six I spotted a fawn pop out of the open woods to the west. I was already standing and got in position to shoot. As it approached I noticed another right behind. I saw the first had buttons and knew I would let him walk in hopes the second was a little doe. As the second approached my hide, I swore her head was slick.... The second deer came about five yards from the base of my tree threw its nose up and gave a great sniff. Then turned to exit. Without knowing I drew picked a spot and loosed an arrow. The arrow hit hard rolled the deer over and stuck in the ground. The deer ran a mere 15 yards, stumbled and fell over. I lifted bow and hands to the sky and said audible thanks to God. This is what I found as I got to the ground.
The shot hit right where I was looking. Took out both lungs and didn't hit either shoulder. Turned out to be a button buck. I try very hard to let young bucks walk. But every now and then you'll have one get by you. This is my second trad whitetail and I'm just a little excited if the smile doesnt show it!
And for those interested. I was using a Shrew 58" Classic Hunter. 48lb at 27" with a 30" Beeman tipped with an 170 grain Zwickey.
