Sharp is not sharp enough
« on: October 06, 2012, 09:47:00 PM »
I have been working with my KME broadhead sharpener and my new stones for a few weeks now. I am sharpening muzzy phantoms and steelforce premiums. I am getting them pretty sharp. They will pop a few hairs but doggone I can not for the life of me get them really shaving sharp. I have probably spent 8-10 hours trying the techniques from the videos. I've read every thread I could find. I've tried different pressures. I've used the sharpie. I have kept the stones really flooded with oil. I have made sure the broadhead is mounted correctly in the clamps. I've done everything I can think of, but I want bare arms. I am hunting with them and I am sure they will kill, but I really wish they were smokin' sharp. What's the secret?

I talked to ron he guided me through the process now my heads are hair popping sharp. I wasn't spending enough time with the course stone. Giving him a call is well advised.

I am having the same issue. How much time did you have to spend with the coarse stone?

Well, I just got off the phone with Ron. It took less than 5 minutes, and I now have a spot on my arm as bare as a baby's butt using the very same phantom I have been working on the whole time.

KME works. And customer service like this is over the top. Don't be like me and spend 8 hours doing it wrong when you can call Ron and get it done right in 5 minutes.

Thanks Ron!

I think most guys use to much pressure at the wrong time.  Once you get to the point that you have a burr, the idea is to lightly roll it over back and forth until the steel falls off.  Then leather strop or cardboard etc.  Most guys trying to sharpen broadheads put too much muscle in it for too long in my opinion.

I think most people don't get to the point that they have a burr and that's a big problem.  The burr indicates that you've caused one edge to meet the other and then you do it on the second edge with the same coarseness of stone as the first.  Only then are you ready to go on to the next stone and unless I'm mistaken you need to get a burr again and so on and so forth.  You don't have to go to a super fine stone to get a super sharp edge.

Ron did the same for me back in a good 5 years ago.  I was going to the finer stones too soon.

The same sharpening truism applies to three blades as well............ getting the burr and lightening up on the fine stones.  I've talked to Ron on numerous ocaisions (but not lately..."hi Ron")  and he is the most helpful guy I know that runs any business. First class all the way.
