Remembering Krypton....the unkillable buck.

This is a true story,a story i have not told in many many years.It's about a buck we called Krypton.I worked part time for the PA game commission in High School at their Schwenksville Pa game farm where they raised Quail and Pheasants.In between the barns and pens were small patches of woods and fields and creek beds,this is where Krypton called home.Krypton was a monster of a buck,pushing 300lbs with a big thick palmated 8 point rack.The palmations between his points were wider than the palm of your hands,reminded you of a moose rack.I don't know how old he was but there were 10 sets of sheds from him in the game farm office building that were found on the property......

Krypton was not one of the ghost bucks that you never see during daylight,he had no fear.Across the road from the game farm was a large Pa game lands and every body hunted it because they knew about Krypton and where he lived.In those game lands is where he became a legend.....

Krypton became legendary not because no one could get a shot at him,he became legendary because you would shoot him and he would not die.The first time the men at the game farm told me about Krypton i did not believe the story's.Then one day i saw him chase a doe across the road right in front of a car,the car hit him hard enough to throw him over the roof of the car and on to the black top road.What i saw next made me believe the story's,Krypton got up and shook off and went on after the doe no worse for the wear....

Krypton would spend most of his time on the game farm property,but as the rut approached he would wander over on the game lands to chase doe's and get into trouble.During hunting seasons you would see him come back across the road with arrows stuck in him and holes in him from shotgun slugs. He would hide on the farm property for a few days to heal then across the road he would go again after the girls and he would come back again with more holes or get hit by a car crossing the road.....

I read an article once about a buck that had a calcified arrow shaft through part of his heart and 4 slugs still stuck in him. All the wounds were completely healed over when he was hit and finally killed by a truck. Deer don't give up easily.

I knew one man personally that put an arrow in Krypton once.He was the only person that had permission to hunt on the game farm.He had worked there for over twenty years and was a traditional archer.He hunted only with his longbow and cedar arrows that he made himself and only from the ground.One morning he was sitting along a hedge row and Krypton came by at 10 yards chasing a doe.He swung his longbow and drew in one smooth motion and sent a cedar arrow through the base of Krypton's neck.He said Krypton never even flinched and just continued on chasing the doe,the arrow had no affect.He found the arrow and a little blood but that was it.He saw Krypton later that day chasing a doe and the legend grew.......

We saw Krypton often during our work on the farm and it was awesome to hold his sheds and wonder what it would be like to bring down the legend.Sadly after i graduated high school the game farm was shut down and the farm was turned into game lands.We all moved on and we never saw Krypton again,but i never heard of any hunter killing him or any car killing him.Even though this all happened in the late 1980's and early 1990's I still hear story's from hunters that say they still see him,usually on those rainy, misty, foggy days they say he comes out of the fog like a ghost grunting and chasing like he always did and disappears just as quick as he appeared.This is the story of the legendary buck we called Krypton......may he live for ever!
