How many tree stands
« on: October 21, 2012, 10:05:00 PM »
I was wondering how many stands you fellas hunt out of. I was counting up the other day and I have and have seven stands hung. Don't know if that is a lot of stands or just about the normal number. Some of the bowhunters have climbers so how many different trees do you hunt out of.

12 but they are for my brother, father and myself. Sure takes a long time to hang and trim that many.

4 behind my house.  15 at the moment on the property my hunting cabin sits on.  Fill in the gaps with a ghillie suit on occasion, and just bought a Guido's Web tree seat.  I like to have a lot of options  ;)

I've got 5 climbers, a loc on and one that leans against a tree (ground hunting seat) within walking distance of my house.

I have 6 stands up, with 2 of them being double stands that my daughter and I can hunt in together.  I also have a ground blind and climber that I can employ if the need arises.

One.  Portable and stealthy.  Rarely hunt the same stand twice and rarely enter an area until I am ready to hunt it.  In the earlier days, and as I watched guys hunt, it became quite apparent that mature deer encounters or harvests were typically first time on stand.  I have come to believe strongly that going in and out educates deer. I like to wait until the right time and wind, slip in and hunt.

With modern equipment, I have 20# on my back (stand and sticks) and I can get up a tree in 7-8 minutes.  I can go to a new spot, change in the middle of day, even scout and hunt the moment I find what I am looking for.

0 stands set. Mostly ground hunting... used my portable once so far this season.

I have done like Dan said, scouted with my portable at my side, found appropriate sign, climbed up, and shot deer a couple hours later.

I get bored waiting in the same tree hour after hour, day after day.

Right now I have 7 hung. I usually have another 3-4 up. I hunt only 137 acres.  However, this has been the slowest year since 1970 for me since my last year in Kansas in 1995. I've hunted from only one stand, 4 times since September 1st.

Took one shot at 7 yards, pass through, deer down in sight less than 30 yards away. Hope to be more motivated when I return home again in a week.

Typically 3 on a buddy's property. Last year I seriously screwed up my back hanging those stands, and I never saw one deer from them all season. This year my stands are still hanging on the garage wall, my back feels great, and I'm having more fun hunting from the ground.

I believe I'm having a garage sale soon.  :)

during the previous century I ran around 7 or 8 screaming eagles and 5 or 6 climax stands - by Oct 10 most not all were up - moved and adjusted thru Thanksgiving - then dwindled down and out of the woods. Since I switched to Chippewa Wedgelocs I leave NO stands in the woods except for AM stands Nov 1st thru 20th. I also run a lonewolf climber even while set stand places are scouted and used. So now I may have 10 to 20 stand sites "ready" meaning shooting lanes, simmons bolts tapped w 4 hidden nearby, entry cleared a little, some with top half of steps in place and a bowholder in place and a hanging chain. Stand comes in on my back.

Last time I counted I had 34 hang on stands.  I don't like climbing stands, don't own one.  About half are Climax (my favorite) and the rest various loc-on type hangers.  I generally have between 15-20 up locally around home in Indiana, by the time season starts.  This year I have an Iowa tag so I put up 5 this summer on Dad's place for starters when I go out there.  On a two week trip to Missouri last year my notes show that I generally had up 6-8 stands at any given time, but moved several for a total of 13-14 hung in that time period.  I like lots of options too!

FWIW - around home about 1/3 of the stands I hang don't get hunted for one reason or another each year...the situation never develops for one reason or another etc.  It pays to be prepared, though.

Oh, by the way, I disagree with a statement I read in Traditional Bowhunter one time when David Peterson was waxing poetic about the joys of ground blinds - him stating he never met a guy that enjoys putting up treestands....I dig it, I really do.  I truly enjoy the whole process from the strategy to the work involved.  Its a big part of the deer hunting process for me.

Right now I have 4 hang ons and two chains up for my Wedgelock stand. Will be putting up two more wedgelock chains and that should do it.

No such thing as having too many in my opinion. I don't like to hunt the same tree more than once in two weeks. On public ground and even a lot on private ground I go the way KSDan does it. Lone wolf assault and four sticks.

16 most are hang ons, and a couple ladder stands
on trees that hang ons would'nt work. I'm with Rayn I enjoy hanging tree stands.

I agree with Ryan about enjoying putting up stands.  Very few things are as exciting to me as scouting a new location, hanging a stand, and anticipating the shot possibilities!

Seventeen hang-ons up in two states.  I also agree with Ryan and Bowwild about enjoying putting up stands.  Bowwild nailed it on the head!
