Look what I rattled in...........
« on: October 22, 2012, 09:35:00 AM »
Sat up on ground at the edge of a cleared field.  Brushed in and some camo netting behind me.  Wind was quartering past my face and blowing just right.  Was busted earlier that afternoon by two yearlings that made their way behind me.  About 6:15 thought I would rattle a bit before I left.  Rattled for 45 seconds and sat the horns down.  Was just about ready to pack up and saw this buck coming to me on a string.  He wasn't acting aggressive, just curious and looking for the two deer fighting.  He came across the field at a fast walk and stopped about 18-20 yard out.  Arrow took him behind the left shoulder taking out his left lungs and exited at the back of his right chest taking out his caudal right lung.  He made it maybe 80 yards.  I saw him go do the death wobble as he went over the rise in a draw.  He was just beyond.  Ate the backstraps yesterday marinated in olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic, salt and pepper.  Two minutes per side in a buttered pan.  To say they were perfection would be an understatement.  :-)

Congrats!  Rattling deer is a blast! i love the look on their faces as they come sneaking in looking around. Very tough to get a shot on them some times.

Have you tried that using a decoy yet?  Now that can be entertaining.   :biglaugh:

Congrats Bret! Have had reponses to rattling on the ground too - what a rush. Appreciate the backstrap prep share - got to go eat!

Thanks all, it was a complete rush.  It was also needed for my well being.  Bow hunting connects me with my childhood, our great planet, and the part of me that needs to provide for myself.  In these changing/uncertain times it is my anchor.

birdbow, the recipe is awesome.  It is a friend of mine, Darren Shue's, recipe and I will say it is mind blowing.  Other than the seasoning/balsamic, the cooking 2 minutes per side is key.  A rare/med.rare is tender, flavorful, with no gamey taste that lots of people complain about.

Must be a good recipe....them Shue boys seem to know how to eat!
