So yesterday is day one of my one week rut vacation I take every year and what an incredible day. I saw a couple nice bucks in the morning but let them walk and witnessed grunting, chasing, everything was getting fired up. What a great week it was going to be. Then in the afternoon, right at 4:30, I see a big 7 come out and start hitting scrapes along the field edge. I had seen this brute before and told my son he would be in trouble if he got too close.
Well, he got too close!
After some grunts and bleats, he turned right to me and at 15 yds my mind flipped into kill mode and I watched the arrow zip right through his chest. It was a little further back than where I was looking but still in the boiler! He ran in a half circle and disappeared in a bedding area and I could see the blood coming out as he ran so I knew I was in good shape!
My family came out after picking up the boys from practice (otherwise this might have been Jake's kill since he was under his stand making scrapes prior to me shooting him!)and we followed the trail to a quick recovery. The wensel woodsman and vapor carbonwood did a fine job. My buddy asked what the heck I hit him with because there was spray everywhere where he dropped....crazy! Well here he is, he is not a monster but after bustin up my ribs at my youngest son's birthday party (another story altogether!!) I feel pretty lucky to have been able to get into the tree to harvest this deer. And I just don't have any restraint sometimes when it comes to taking deer with my longbow....time for a doe tag!
Hope everybody's season is going well!
