Traditional Bows and the Almighty Doe
« on: October 30, 2012, 04:42:00 PM »
I know, weird title.

It seems to me that traditionalists have a higher respect for the doe than modern gear hunters.

It's not about "had to do some herd management" or "that doe would be great for a woman or a kid."
No, in here threads from "our group" read, "Woo Hoo, I just put a ton of meat in the freezer and I got a nice doe!"

I'm proud to say we trad bow shooters celebrate the harvest of a doe equally to that of a buck. I can tell by the amount of photos and stories submitted here or through magazines like Traditional Bowhunter, that taking a doe is a trophy and worthy of every praise among traditional bowhunters.

I LOVE doe, they are my favorite animal. She is the mother of our endeavors and provides the most delicious sustenance found in North America.
Just one more step please!

x2...a crafty doe is the epitome of nervousness and awareness of her surroundings.  a fine accomplishment with traditional gear and one I cherish.

Agreed, however, i also think anything taken with trad equipment is trophy worthy.  :archer:

On a side note, when i read the title I immediately remembered with G.Fred Asbell said in one of his books, something along the lines of...I don't hunt bucks, I hunt does.  During rut, you can almost guarantee if you find a doe, there will be a buck nearby.

I agree it is refreshing to see a doe harvest celebrated. With trad gear and in areas of low deer density it is quite an accomplishment.

Taking a doe is every bit as challenging as a buck. I am always proud to harvest either sex.

I'd rather kill a doe with my longbow than a P&Y buck with a compound or a B&C buck with a rifle.

A mature doe is one smart wary critter.

I believe that a mature matriarch Doe is the hardest deer to harvest in the woods! I have several where I hunt and they are WAY more wiley than the smaller bucks that I am seeing this year! I have been busted only twice this year both by mature does, they are always on the alert truly a Trad bowhunters trophy!

You better have everything just right to dump the string on an old doe with little ones around.  High Alert doesn't even begin to describe their mode.  Absolutely a great accomplishment with stick and string!  Always excellent table fare to boot!

I agree that any animal taken with Trad gear is a trophy, but I am just as proud to take a big mature doe as a buck. I think some of these big Does are as smart or smarter than some Bucks.

When I hunt with my stick and string any animal taken is a trophy to me. But an old doe is one of the most alert animals out there. To get within bow range and not getting caught is a trick in its self.

Absolutely Arwin! Does are harder to hit than a big old buck anyway.

Does are much more cautious in my area.  I've had a harder time killing does than bucks for the past few years now.
