Right Wing or Left Wing Feathers?

Back when I started making my own arrows I bought a left wing jig as I was told left wing is the correct style for traditional archers.  My hunting buddy tells me I should be using right wing feathers with a right wing jig, since I use screw in points and broadheads.  He says left wing makes them unscrew and right wing keeps the point screwed on tight on impact.  What's your thoughts on this?  Should I switch to right wing?

You don't have to switch. I shoot left wing and my point do loosen up. You fix that by simply puting string wax on the threads. Put in on thick and its hard to get them loose.

Conventional wisdom says LW for RH shooter & RW for lefties.  This is based on maximizing the rotation of the arrow.  However, I've seen many folks shoot otherwise with no ill effects at all.

The most important factor is the get the correctly spined arrow for your set up.  You should be fine as stated above.

If your jig is a LW jig, you'll have better results with LW feathers.  However, as far as shooting goes it makes no difference.

I prefer LW, since RW ones hit my finger sometimes.

Doesn't matter just make sure you use correct jig. As for the points it's the vibration that makes them come loose. Use a dab of hot melt on threads to cure that!

Blue thread lock works to keep the head tight as well.

off the shelf with cock feather in doesn't right wing give more clearance.
Your leading edge of the feather is in the corner of the shelf and the trailing edge rides higher and should clear the shelf easier.
Crap I got to go look at my arrows now. But I am right handed and shoot RW. I tried LW but did not like the tuning result.

I use right wing feathers and a right wing jig (right handed) and my points come loose all the time. I have shot both and there really is no difference.

Like Barry said, LW for RH & RW for LH shooters is the way I was always told, I tried RW and the feather always buzzed my hand, with LW I don't get that. As far as better it doesn't matter, an old shooting buddy of mine shoots RW and he's right handed and he is also one of the best shots I know.

The best thing I've done to keep my points tight is insert the insert end of the arrow in a sandwich bag and then thread the point into the insert through the plastic bag. It really keeps em tight, especially if you hit it with a little heat to melt it a bit. Creates a gasket that fills in the empty space that causes the points to rattle loose.

Actualy it does make a diferance if you shot off your nuckes if you dont do that and use a shelf it makes no diferance other than in your brain

I am looking at getting a jig soon, and one of my bows (saluki on order) will shoot off the knuckles. I am RH, and shoot off the shelf for my recurve and longbow, but the saluki will shoot with the arrow on the right side of the bow (using thumbring)

What do you recommend or should I get 2 different clamps with the Bitzenberger jig?

Thanks for all the responses!  I am glad I don't have to buy a new jig and all new feathers!  More money for another bow!  LOL!
