sitting on the ground for long periods, what kinds of snacks?
« on: November 07, 2012, 08:58:00 AM »
just curious as to what "scentless" snacks you all use. I have a natural ground blind in some palmettos which leaves me anywhere between a 3 yard shot out to around a 15 yard shot. I am going to start sitting mid day for up to 8 hours, and know I will get hungry- what do you all eat while in the field? I like straight up Peanut butter sandwiches but come on, the deer have got to be able to smell wheat bread and peanut butter!?!?!?!?

thoughts?

My guess is the deer can smell you and anything you eat.
Just pray for a favorable wind.

I'm also a peanut butter-jelly guy.

I take a PB&J & apple for lunch.

I also usually have a couple Snickers bars and eat one before gutting the deer for energy on the drag out.  Also gives me a time to work off the shakes before charging in with both hands and a knife inside a carcass.  ;-)

No "snacks".  Ever listened to someone unwrap a cough drop in church?

We had a guy on our lease that would unwrap butterscotch candy and stick them in the fork of his tree so he didn't make noise. He always forgot them and got infested with ants.    :biglaugh:

Oatmeal pies are my go to snack.

I am probably overly anal when I get in the woods.

All of my camo hangs outside after it is washed with scent free detergent, and that is after the basin has been run through 2 times with just water before the clothes go in! my socks, moccassins, and Ghilli all stay outside in the weather. I do not dress until I am in the field (dont want to sweat in the stuff)Florida hunting)) and I have scent killer with me when I am changing- spray shoes, arm pits, crotch, etc.... i have been arms reach from critters several times in an unfavorable wind.

I am not worried about ME smelling. I am worried about my food smelling. or am I way over thinking it???

Used to be a worry wart too now I don't worry about odors on me I just try to hunt favorable winds. Used to carry pee bottle, wash cloths....now just wear knee high rubber boots try not to leave sent trail hope the wind is right. I don't believe it's possible to keep them from smelling you with bad wind. Just my 2 cents yea I'm also getting old and lazy! Oh yea pee from the tree too it's fun!

Trail Mix, jerky, apple, cheese, maybe an Adkins low carb bar and plenty of water. Always carry food items in a zip lock plastic bag inside my pack. The apple core goes back in the bag when finished to hide odors. I'll keep sardines, Kipper snacks and crackers at the truck for more formal eating. Ha! Ha!

Nature's Valley granola bars are my snacks.

BTW during rifle season I take thermos of hot chocolate every day with me. Doesn't seem to affect the hunting over the years.

I usually eat what ever i have and put the garbage in a ziplock bag and zip it up.  Then use the scent wipes to clean my face and hands to reduce the smell.  Of course if you are eating something native to the area you are hunting, it can be an attactant, other wise i consider forgien smells to be what deer are alerted by.

I usually carry Clif Bar energy bars of various flavors with me; they work well for breakfast or as an afternoon snack.  Usually don't have a strong smell and they're packed with calories (~240 per bar) and nutrients your body needs.  They're very small and light, so they don't take up much space in your pack and you don't have to worry about them getting squished -- toss'em in and go.  I get them at the grocery store for $1 a piece, and I've seen them at some Wally Worlds for about $0.88 I believe.

Definitely take them out of the package they come in and put them in a ziploc bag or wrap them up in something like a paper towel; the default packaging is very crinkly and can make a lot of noise when you unwrap it.

What I eat on an all day sit depends on whether I took a table and silver ware along with me.  I like good hotdogs and tea on a stick fire, cold chicken if it is mostly legs and wings. ham sandwiches if I have good tomatoes and peppers and some cheese that taste like cheese, as in Limburger or some good ole Dutch variety.  In a pinch I will go for a tuna sandwich or if I am not too hungry sardines in mustard sauce on rye bread. Some fruit for desert and I usually have a pipe and a cup of tea after a meal when I am out doors. Don't worry about the deer smelling your food, they have not taken any my food from me yet.

Unwrap snacks from their noisy packaging and put them in ziplock bags. The ziplocks are more quiet.

Like others - I take snacks out of their original packaging.  However, I do not use any type of plactic/ziplock types of bags - rather I wrap everyting in paper towels.  I find paper towels to be nice and quiet.

Deer associate our smell with danger. I doubt the smell of peanut
Butter will spook them.
