She ducked my arrow...again!
« on: November 09, 2012, 07:36:00 PM »
Second miss of the year today, and once again... right over the back.  I read the Fred Eichler article in TBM and read the recent thread about it here on trad gang.  So today I really focused on the lower third.... still just high!   But it was just as Fred said....  I didn't miss, she dropped a full body width right before my arrow reached her!

Check it out, I videoed it this time. 21 yard shot.  btw... one vain of my arrow had blood on it, so I just skimmed her back.

Them critters be fast!

Stopping a deer has only worked out a few times for me. I would rather shoot on a slow walk than stop them.

Stopping them, put's them on alert. A wired whitetail is hard to hit. I prefer to shoot at them walking.

Keep after them Tim! Looks to me she was traveling at a pretty good clip, not sure you had any option other than trying to stop her! Lots of season left.

I don't know about OK but when shooting a Texas deer I look at the bottom hair line and usually center punch the lungs.

I think they are very similar to Texas Deer Wingnut.

Happened to me more than once.I seen a vid of a fellow shooting a wheel bow at a doe and she ducked down and was headed the other way as the arrow went over her back.

Wow.... That's incredible!  That deers tail was down too. Typically that's a green light on a deer. tail up is full alert.

i watched that film a dozen times and finally got it stopped right at the release and caught the arrow half way to the deer before it had even moved. then i brought the film forward one frame at a time as the deer ducked that arrow....

I think I'd be inclined to come back for that one with a smoke pole..... speedy Gonzales deer right there....LOL

You need to half your distance and shoot low to get that one with a bow..... incredible!

Thats how it been going for me. Had a doe tonight that was on edge. If she was a little closer, I might have shot but when they are that wired, I pass.

What Shadman said.  You "cocked" that deer when you made the grunt and the bow just released her spring.  She was probably watching you as you released.

On the other hand, a moving shot at 21 yards would have been iffy at best, especially if she bolted.

Speed don't kill, but slow don't kill even later.    :biglaugh:

Here is a doe I shot earlier this year, near the end of the video I show the first shot in slow motion and you can see how much she drops. They are amazingly fast animals.

Yeah, I know that is ideal, but the last time I tried to shoot a walking deer I missed and I just felt like I never really picked a spot.  I need to practice the walking shot.

And with this deer I think a foot below the hairline would have been about right!    ;)
By the way Mike, my son is looking forward to that Phoenix lite you are building for him!

That sort of thing has happened to me more times than I care to remember. It's part of what makes whitetail hunting so difficult.

Will you eat that? If not, why did you kill it?

Tsalt, I feel your pain. I missed the same stinkin' doe yesterday evening and this evening. Same situation as you, she jumped the string both times! I will aim at the ground if I get another chance at her. She looked mighty tasty.
