Tues Nov.6th I took off work early to hunt. About 1/2 hr before last light I saw a nice buck in a pasture 100yrds away. Had my rattling horns with me, so I gave a short not so loud rattle sequence. He was faceing the other way, but immediately turn my way. You could tell he was definately interested. I put the horns away, he jumped the fence and came running stoping 25yrds out and behind my tree. He stood there only a few seconds looking for the fight, then come on in, passing my stand at 5yrds. I took the shot as he was walking by. I've shot most of my deer as they're in a slow walk so this was no different. Only this time with the angle and the position I was on, in my stand my bottom limb hit my treestand sending my arrow left as he's walking to my right. The arrow hit him to far back, liver maybe, guts deffinately. I was sick. I was pretty sure this was a fatal shot, but I knew it would be a tough tracking job. I watched were he went then slipped out after dark. I decided to wait till mourning. Went in to work late, after looking for 3hrs, no deer very little sign. After work a co-worker(trad hunter friend) went with me to look some more. With less than 1hr of light left we found him in the bottom of a deep ditch 400yrds from where I shot him. We don't think he bedded anywhere, we think he made it to where we found him and just fell in the ditch, and thats where he stayed. Anyway don't ever give up, you never know. I'am very thankful we found my deer. Buck or doe does'nt really matter I just hate it when you can't find one. God bless and shoot straight. PS watch out for your treestand!
