Another Shrew ???
« on: August 15, 2007, 08:30:00 PM »
Which Shrew has more speed? The longbow or the recurve model using same weight and arrow set-ups? Does anyone own both? And is there any difference on how they draw? Thanks for all the help. I will be ordering one real soon.

I own both but dont really notice much difference.  I would say my recurve but I think that is mainly because it is a few more pounds.  I have never put either one trough a chrono.  I think you will be happy with either one.  Or just order one of each!  :bigsmyl:    :bigsmyl:

I think the recurves are slightly faster at the same bow weight. I have never clocked them (the recurves) though, so it might be my imagination.

A recurve limb design on any bow should give a slight speed advantage over a straight or reflexed limb, it's a matter of physics. Having said that speed only kills on the highway and in my opinion it's not at the top of the list. While good speed in a bow is desirable, I think sometimes we put too much emphasis on it's importance. There are other things  more important that can be incorporated into either a recurve or longbow that will contribute to better accuracy.

David, to answer your question, we try to give both our longbows and recurves the same "feel" by using the same grip on all our models. Another goal is to give the bows a smooth 3# per inch at the end of the draw. If there is a slight speed advantage from one style to another it shouldn't be a consideration in choosing which bow to buy.

Speed...my Shrew longbow at 57# puts an arrow through both sides of a deer. My Shrew Recurves do the same, with the same weight of arrow.

While I prefer recurves (right now), I really love my shrew. It is one of the easiest bows to shoot I've ever had the pleasure to use. That said, it is certainly not the fastest bow in my stable but gets picked quite often despite that fact.

I don't know why, but I prefer the shrew longbow over the shrew recurves. It just feels...."more right". My personal experience has shown me the longbow is a bit quieter, and a bit smoother feeling than the recurve model, jmho. And it's plenty fast enough for any game animal you chose to pursue.

Whether you choose the longbow or recurve shrew, you will find that these bows are special and deserve a try. You might find they are exactly what you are looking for.

After reading the responses I had to go outside in extreme heat and do my oun test. I do not have a Shrew curve but do have a 58in Sammuri and a 56in chamelon. I tested the 56in Shrew against my PTF Yew-Coco Black Widow. The Shrew is 48# at 26in and the Widow is 53#@28in. So the Widow should be right at 47# at 26in. Now in all fairness to both, I have been shooting only the Shrew since my accident. I got back shooting about 4 weeks or so ago. Now to the results. Speed is too close to tell by the arc of the arrow on a 40 yard shot. Both bows shooting the same shaft seem to be very close. If there would be an advantage it would be 5fps or so that is hard to tell. Accuracy goes hands down to the Shrew. I thingk Ron L. might be on to something about the grip. I find myself getting comfortable with the Widow (Asbell grip). The widow is 2 years old. Next is the noise level. Hands down to the Shrew, I even have a Mountain Muffler string on the Widow and for a Widow its quite. I personally belive that noise is wasted energy. To the draw, I do not understand how it can bw but after shooting the Shrew for the last month or so the draw feels slightley smoother. After shooting about an hour and sweating like a pig, the winner in my hands is the Shrew. I have a lot of history and respect for the Widow but if I were going hunting tommorow it would be the 56in Shrew. Thats what this is all about for me ,,,The Best HUNTING Bow. Out Door Dan. P.S. I am now on the prowl for a 54 or 52in Shrew. Wife can be included in the trade package. LOL
