beman MFX questions for 57#@28"
« on: November 25, 2012, 03:27:00 AM »
ok guys i've given up trying to tune my GT 55/75's. i've been from full length to 28" and can't get good consistent BH flight. i shoot a bob lee takedown recurve at 57#@28" i draw around 27". i shoot 100gr insert and 250gr point.
i have been trying to get these tuned for 2 months and i'm ready to try something different.

i'm considering the MFX classics but would like to know what spine has the best chance of working.
i would still be using 100gr inserts and 250gr point. i would also foot it with some 2020 shaft. will 2020 work or will i need 2018?

i was thinking 400 spine? my arrow length can go down to around 28" if needed. have done some searches but would just like to hear what you reckon for my setup. i haven't shot skinny carbons before that's all.

You should use a 340 spine if you want to go with the MFX classic 28 inches long and that heavy point and insert.Imho.
The 250gr point or the 100gr insert even is a bit heavy I guess.
But with the footing maybe the 400 spine works.

Just my 2 cent.

I've shot MFX arrows for 5 years now, very durable and easy to tune arrow IMHO. I've given them up for small game and deer hinting in favour of wood (largely due to price) but if I was going for larger species I'd go right back to them.

I found the spine calculator to give very accurate results with regards to tuning MFXs - but you have to remember that the weighted insert acts as an internal footing and has the effect of shortening the actual segment of the arrow that is capable of flexing.

As an example I was shooting a 28.5 inch shaft with 75gr insert and 175gr broadhead out of a centre cut Toelke Whip and getting great flight. 400 could well work out for your set up.

I agree with Rossco.MFX shafts are very tuff and forgiving.400 spine should work well for your setup.I have shot the 500 spine @29" from 48lb to 55lbs with 200gr up front. My draw length is 28".I think with the 340's you would have to leave them close to full length.

I'm thinking 400 as these tend to run stiff

I've been shooting the MFX and Axis shafts for years now. I also shoot the 55-60# @ 28". I know that both the 400 and the 340 will work very well with one caveat....FOC. With the point weight you are talking about I would be leaning towards the 340. I shoot 200 grains up front on a 29" arrow. With the 400 I get two holes every time. With the 340's and extra head weight I get pass thru's. Your choice.

Ozy Clint,
I just went through this process this year and had real good results... I really like the Beman MFX Classics. I was given 4 used 400s & 8 or 9 340s so I worked up two solutions I could use interchangeably depending on broadhead choice. I too found STU's calculator to be pretty accurate BUT you absolutely need to enter the data correctly for the inserts & footing info, then you're golden.... The insert weight does not impact as directly as you might think when you go to the 100grains because they're pretty long which shortens the dynamic shaft portion. I don't have time to elaborate right now but I've included a thread link to a very successful season using these! I'd be happy to dialogue and send you a copy of the STU calculator spreadsheet forms already configured so you can tweak and analyze...!??

The Toelke is 52@27, cut to centre. I forgot to mention I was shooting 500s for the setup I mentioned earlier.

looks like either one may work.
i'm looking for total weight of around 650gr.

stus calculator says i'm way underspine regardless of whatever i put in. to get close i have to input arows that i know would be too stiff. it says arrows that i currently shoot out of my 69# bow would be close.
this is what makes me still undecided.

unless all these years i've somehow fluked good flight with way underspined arrows???

Are you inserting the data for the weighted insert into the footing box on the calc? If I don't I show way under spined, if I do it right and put the data in there I'm dead on.

I think you could use either the 400 or 340 just depending on how long you want your arrow to be. Over 30" you want the 340, under 30" use the 400.

my AMO draw length is 26" so this would allow me to go down to a minimum arrow length of 27".
400's might be the go.

thanks for all the help guys

re: fluking goo flight.

the guy who owns the archery shop near me shoots a predator 60  # recurve, and a 70# tred barta longbow.

he shoots 3555s, cut to 29"  with 275 up front. these are about 30# under spined according to Stu's calculator.

when i shoot them from his bow they whack the riser so hard it scares me and the arrows purpose, roll and wobble. he groups 3" at 20 yards in the range at his shop.

are his arrows under spine? yes by a mile. Can he shoot straight? yes. do they fly well? for him only. are they " Tuned" this fella, nice guy, couldnt care less and has not heard or stu miller!

cheers
