A Nock Question?
« on: November 28, 2012, 12:50:00 PM »
I got some new shafts and the nocks fit too tight on my string. They are easton axis nocks. Whats the best way to loosen the nock fit on your string?

Put them in hot water to soften them and open them up to your liking.

I took a file to the insides of mine - but I like bigbadjon's suggestion better. I took too much off of a few of mine and now they like to jump off the string.

Though filing down or heating and expanding nocks works, I prefer to reserve my string if necessary. That being said, I don't find the throat diameter of X nocks to be any smaller than other nocks that fit on 5/16-inch diameter carbon shafts, or, for that matter, than the 5/16 Bohning classic nocks I use on my tapered woodies.

May sound on the gross side but I use my teeth to open and close nocks.  works for me.

I usually fold up a piece of course sandpaper and use it sanding both sides at once and evenly.

I haven't had a string/serving size yet with B50 that even approachs being workable with any of the carbon nocks.  All my bows are B50 only, that's one reason I don't shoot carbon much.

I use the hot water method.  I would rather preserve the amount of material on the nock rather than removing it with file, sandpaper and etc..

Would this work with tightening the nock as well?

I use sandpaper to get the nocks just perfect for my string.

You shouldnt modify any nock, its a precision part made to fit a certain range of diameters. If you start heating or sanding it you are weakening the nock, increasing the chance of it breaking, possibly damaging your bow that you may have spent a lot of money on. If my nocks don't fit I re serve the string. Ive seen guys modify their nocks and have the blow, essentially dry firing their bows. Wouldn't risk it on my bows at all, not worth it.

I've standardized my strings for all my FF compatible bows with SBD 8-strand. CE nocks don't fit and I hate to reserve all my strings. I could have ordered them served diffrrently, but GT nocks fit real tight in the CE shaft and fit my string servings perfectly so I've replaced everything with the GT nocks.

I ruined a really nice Lost Creek recurve (the only one I've seen from Chad) when the nock sheared off on one side. It's a nock that I had filed out to fit. Maybe I left a square corner at the bottom, or maybe I filed one side more than the other, but that broke me of filing nocks. It may work great for others, and had worked well for me, but once burned.......

I've heated them in boiling water as a temporary fix but all of my arrows are, with the possible exception of point weight, the same, they serve as fodder for three different bows. When a new bow comes into the fold and nock fit on that particular serving is a problem I re-serve to standardize.
