Heavy inserts?

should hopefully receive my new to me TT this week, ordered some Easton Axis shafts, a field point test kit, and some feathers. Axis shafts use 16 grain inserts, but in wanting the highest performing setup possible I was thinking about ordering 75 grain brass inserts, has anybody used these, or would recommed them for a 54# TT recurve?

I also found 100 grain brass inserts. Just wondering, should I use hot melt for the inserts until I find the correct length of arrow to use for tuning purposes?

I've been using the 100 grain brass inserts with good success at 48 to 55 lbs on Beman MFX Classic 400's and 500's.

I shoot Easton Axis shafts with the 75 grain brass inserts.  I only use this glue that was recommended by Tim Cosgrove at Kustom King Archery and it's what he does his carbon arrows with.  I've never had a problem with targets pulling points out and I've been able to switch out inserts by gently heating a point with a torch.  I also use this glue with my wood arrows as well.  Here's the link on the Kustom King website for the glue called Quick Stick:

Here's my setup:
44# Super Shrew Foam/Carbon 56" Classic Hunter drawn 28" and I shoot either of these two set-ups:

Easton Axis 600 series cut 29" BOP, 75 grain brass insert and 145 grain Kustom King Trailmaker broadhead.

Easton Axis 500 series cut 29.5" BOP, 75 grain brass insert, 100 grain steel point insert and 130 grain Grizzly two blade broadhead.  

Both of these setups fly perfect from the same bow.  My go-to setup is the 600 Axis.

For tuning I use some saran wrap,put alittle over the insert and push it in.It will hold the insert and point tight enough for tuning.You just need a softer target that doesn't grab too tight like a bag target.I get my tuning done without glueing the inserts in until I'm done tuning.I use this on all carbons including HIT inserts.I just don't like to put any heat on my carbons

You can get 100 grain brass inserts and 70 grain break off inserts that also yield a 50 grain insert.  Gives you a lot of flexibility with point weights.  I used the 100 grain brass with 125 grain field points on Axis 400s for targets, then switched to 70 grain brass and 170 grain broadhead and 25 grain aluminum adaptor.  Could have dropped down to the 50 grain brass insert for about equal weight, but wanted the heavier arrow.  No flight problems with either out of my 50# and 52# ACSs. I use just a little hot melt on the inserts. If you use epoxy, it's very difficult to get them out without damaging the shaft.

I use steel adaptors with glue on heads they are cheaper than the brass inserts and can be had in several weights.

I use hot melt glue because I'm a tinkerer. I've never had an insert pull out that I recall. I've used brass 100 and 50 grains. I've also used the steel adapters as well as long and short aluminums. It just depends on the broadhead, bow, shaft etc. Lots of variables. I think maybe I have figured out what works for both my RER and Kanati: Beman ICS Bowhunter 500, 50 grain brass insert, 135 grain Zwickey Delta, long aluminum adapter (42 grains). Total weight is approx. 470 grains, right at 10 grains per pound of draw. I ordered some Simmons Tiger Sharks (135 grains) yesterday so I expect they will work with the same setup. I was impressed by the nasty holes I saw in the kill pictures thread.

I've found that I can't cut axis 500's any shorter than 29" no matter how much weight I put on the tip.  Course I shoot high 4o's and have short draw.

I have used the 100 grain inserts. When I bought my Axis shafts that was the only size option. I also footed my shafts with 2 in piece of old 1917 alum shaft. I use 145 grain broad heads and field points from my 55# longbow. I found these shafts the easiest to tune of all the carbons I have tried. Also the toughest with the footing.
I use golf shaft epoxy to glue them in, cut from the nock end when tuning.

I will go along with whatever Ray Lyon says! He got me squared away with my St Axis 400s and 75 gr inserts.

I shoot a 54# 3pc pronghorn longbow.  I shoot 400 axis cut at 29.5 with a 100 grain insert and 150 bh.  I draw 28 and they fly great!

We need your draw length and the size of the axis shafts you ordered. Alot depends on these 2 things along with the info that you have given us.
 I like at least 10 grains per pound for the weight of draw at my draw length. I start with the weight and then the broad head I want to shoot then work on the correct arrow shaft.

I draw 28", ended up ordering Beman ICS arrows because 3rivers was out of Axis.

I have a Zipper SXT recurve that is 52# at my draw length of 29". I shoot the Beman 400's at 30 1/2" with a 50 grain brass insert and a 200 grain head. I also shoot Beman 340's at 31 1/2 with a 100 grain insert and a 200 grain head. Both of these shoot great out of the same bow. Also I use hotmelt glue with Bemans without any issue. Don't get it hotter than just melting the glue and clean the inside of the shaft before gluing.
