Just got in from clearing a bike trail around our house with my 6 yr old son and 5 yr old daughter.  We are using the brush to build a fort.  Had to use flashlites cuz it was dark out.  They are just as nuts as I am.
To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target

20+ years ago I would grab a half roll of summer suasage, a bow or fishing pole and head out for a weekend of adventure. I'm still doing it today in some of the same areas.

This stuff ain't no rocket surgery science!

Yep, years ago I would take my hickory sapling bow and dogwood arrows fletched with tied on chicken feathers to the woods and slay large animals and bad men. Now I call it stump shootin  :bigsmyl:

When you start drawing your bow in your Fort like I do and pretend the bush's are grizzly bears,  the logs are deer with antlers, tree stumps are standing groundhogs,Root balls are buffalo and you pretend you are an Indian and tracking game and talk to yourself while tracking game saying "he went dat away and me hunt for food to feed family and  women be happy when me come home with meat"  Then you are 8 again..   :biglaugh:

Do I have to ?

63 going on 8. Hell, in my mind I still slay giants, but out of political correctness am  also forced to call it stump shooting.

Now that winter is at hand and the shrubbery is going dormant, I have a plan for updating some of my forts. I plan to transplant bushes so I don't have to add so much brush each year. This ought to work just fine on my permanent fort near the crab apples trees. I am also thinking of planting a perennial flower - we call 'em four o'clocks - around my ground blinds. That way it will repair itself each year. That ought to lay a good ambush for those marauding pirates!

Maybe building forts as kids was preparing us for adulthood?

55 going on 8 here. I want to round up all the used Christmas trees I can find and stack them around some certain spots. I think they would make some awsome forts.

I tried planting shrubbery to "fort"ify some areas but it didn't work out. Darn! I should try it again.

I've never thought of that but my grandson sure likes to build forts in the house.  If he spies a couple of blankets, ottoman, and couch he just starts connecting the dots.

Personally, I reckon I like to install little "tree houses".

No kidding, I remember when I was in my very early teens my dad and his brothers used to talk about building tree houses right before deer season! That was 45 years or so ago. I envisioned big ol structures with doors, walls, roofs etc.  When I saw the first one they were just a couple of support 2x4s and floor boards -- tree stands!  They did build them sort of big though because they would sometimes go out the night before and sleep in them.  They must have been anxious for opening day!

On the other hand, if you do add the "He Man Woman Haters Club" sign, other hunters might think it was built by a kid and not a hunter. Then they might pass on hunting that area thinking kids are everywhere!

And yes, I still build forts! 38 going on 8 here.

cahaba

I halped my two grandsons build a fort awhile back and I think I had more fun than they did. 53 going on 8.

I know the feeling. Every time I see an empty cardboard box I feel warm and fuzzy inside , you know that feeling you get when you climed  rope in front of the gym class!! Lol.

Maybe plant some shrubs the deer like to eat to "fort"ify your blinds - kill two birds with one stone.

I already have several spots planned for new forts, now that our deer season ended yesterday.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.
