Will acetone remove Teflon coating?

Will acetone harm the brazen process?

What's the best metal to metal bonding agent(glue)?

Any single beveled industrial razor blades available?

Just curious....wanting to try a bhead to some specs, but can't get anyone to build it...had a guy that said he would...but after two years figured I'd try it myself.

Yes, I will be adding razorblades to an existing head, and need for the razors to be flat sided on one side for smooth transition.

Any help would be appreciated...thanks.

Acetone should not interfere with brazen as the heating process will take care of any residue but not sure what the heating process to braze will do to the rest of the metal

You do need the metal to be as clean as possible.

Yes...clean as possible...with a steel wool buffing for better bond to what ever glue is best...I've heard a long time JB was best...just didn't know if there was anything better to come along.

JB weld works wonders.Acetone removes most coatings not sure about teflon never used it on any.

T... my own experimenting has showed that Plio Bond contact adhesive works best for blades. Blades won't pop off on hard contact like they can with epoxies or super glues.

Brazing is kinda like soldering only with copper so acetone won't hurt it... it's all metal.

Acetone might disolve the teflon.

Blades for an X-Acto or similar razor plane will be single bevel (and about twice as thick as a safety razor).

Seriously, I don't think a 0.005" edge matters a lick whether it is single or double beveled.  Just use a single-edged razor.

And another vote for J-B Weld for your application.  Silver soldering may work and is cooler than brazing (won't hurt temper of the blades).

I would think it would be best to remove the Teflon for the strongest bond. Metal to metal instead of metal to Teflon.
I'm not sure if Acceton will effect Teflon but I know how to find out. Just holler if you want me to ring our Teflon coater and ask.

Bill...actually, I'm modifying one of your heads...the 160 or what ever, not 190, wide heads you call Grizzlies now....

Maybe you could send me a couple with no nothing on them but ground like you normaly send them out....that would make it easier for me...

Charlie....I used the ply bond, least that's what I think it was from Jack ...but I think it was old and would not hold...didn't really want to cure.

Stump...I want a single bevel ONLY because it will go flat to flat for a smooth transition....

Terry,Depending on how much contact surface there is going to be, you might want to try Sta- Brite low temp silver solder. I think you can find it at Tower Hobbies also. It goes on very easy and hold really good. Does not require a lot of heat to bond. Jim G

Jack Howard was a big believer in attaching razor blades to broadheads; he did it for years and showed how in his catalog.  He used a jig to break shick injector blades and glued them to a 3 blade broadhead with Pliobond.  I bought a sample from him, it is buried somewhere in my collection.

Jack Howard used Plio Bond. I used the same years ago when I glued razor blades to some Bodkins. Mean looking heads....when I spoke to Jack he told me to clean the broadheads real well but I can't remember what he used or I used....   :confused:

Winchester makes a gun cleaning solvent that will strip the Teflon right off. If that's what your wanting to do. Let me know if you need the name and I'll dig out the can.

Unfortunately I dont have any of those heads in the bare metal stage at this point. If I can remember I'll call the coater tomarrow and ask him what to use to strip the teflon.

Are you familiar with the original Wolverines?Just for the thrill of it (I'm easily impressed)! I have some of the original Wolverine blades that I have spot welded between two Grizzly halves. Once I get them brazed and heat treated it should make a pretty cool head to play with.

I have a dental lab tech friend who is specially trained in metalurgy to weld,solder acid etch,or sandblast with alum oxide, about any metal alloy combo you can think of. They are also experts in metal adhesives and know the force science and limitations behind it. Call your dentist and you will have good info. If he is a bowhunter he will likely enjoy messing with this kind of project. He will at least refer you to his lab tech friends.

The coater says the best way to remove Teflon is to sand or file it off. No readily available chemicals will harm it.
