Whew...........where do i start......I have been blessed to be able to hunt on some of finest woods the south has to offer, the Mississippi Delta river bottoms. In fact i killed this deer 100 so yards from the big Muddy. Same dirt Desoto tromped through before he met his fate.  Fast forward...i am the only bowhunter on this 8500 tract of private land. I am encased with gun hunters all of the season nestled in their German Machine nests over any decent spot. So 8 years or so ago , i hit the entanglement. To get away! CUT OVER! Cucko Buros fields, sand flats, just knarley thick stuff none of my gun hunting friends would hunt. I have a tree left bvy loggers that every year i hang from my Guido and miss nice mature bucks!!  i never scout it, squirrel hunt it, or even look towards it's direction when i ride by it in the summer.. I only rutt hunt it...no cameras..no scents ..nothing....i love this spot. My maximun shot is almost 20 yards..it's ugly...but............i get shots!.. Every year i seem to launch an arrow only to hit limbs, main beams, a back hock, iron wood 2mm branch, pull up rope  ( yep!)   etc........i have screwed the pooch a lot in my hole!
well last thursday as i was hanging from my guido debating about a cup of coffee or a nap, i heard a grunt and leaves scuffling....i know that drill so well... i stood up, unhooked my bow and spun around the opposite side of tree to get ready.. Here comes a doe with a mture buck grunting and chasing. One quick look confirmed he met our strict trophy rules ( 18" spread or 22 main beams") and i tighten my grip. The doe trotted down the trail and took a right hand turn 18 steps from me countering me. I drew back bow held at full draw and picked my spot on approaching buck. he in turn took a right and gave me a slightly qrt. away shot at 20. Next thing i saw was a blue capped Momentum arrow burried infront of his second to last rib angleing forward.  Before i could let my bow down he piled up 20 yards to my right. DOA!..I stood there in silence. The monkey was off. I reclined back in my Guido and poured that cup of coffee. I had finally done it. Killed a P and Y caliber buck on my own soil, my own terms with my own hand made equipment. My prayer of thanks was quick and i didnt finished that cup so i could scoury down the cottonwood to retrieve my trophy. 1-2-8 steps i was there, as i lifted his head up i could help but bust out laughing.. I mature 5 1/2 year old 225# Mississippi Delta toad...................with no brow tines!!!   115" 6 point!!....whew....thank goodness..i still got my challenge ahead. All good things dont come to an end at least for me.. they just continue..but gosh what "cull buck"......trophy for me but i did break my jinx out of that tree... i am now 1-8!!....i am on a roll.  look out post rutt.
