Adding pigment to Gasket Lacquer
« on: December 31, 2012, 11:28:00 AM »
I ran this topic in the past and I didn't get many replies so I thought I would try again.  I make quite a few arrows and use alot of orange gasket lacquer which I can no longer purchase.  I was wondering if anyone had ever tried to add paint pigment to clear gasket lacquer to get a color they wanted.
Thanks, Gordon

Lacking a commercial spinner/shaker, I suspect it would be difficult to get pigment evenly dispersed in Gasket Lacquer as thick and heavy as it is.

I'm not sure if it will work but ya might try this.
Years ago I dabbled in taxidermy. To get the air brush colors I needed I would mix a little oil based art pigment in with the lacquer to spray. It worked well.
You might try this with a small sample. If it works you can make any color ya like.

All Bohnning products are laquer, maybe a little orange paint mixed in would work.

Thanks guys, I guess I need to go to a paint store and have some pigment added to clear gasket lacquer and see if it works.  I think gasket lacquer and Bohnning lacquer may not be compatable since they take different kinds of glue for the fletching.
