Anyone make their own...
« on: January 02, 2013, 09:17:00 AM »
...wool pullovers. I'd like to give it a try. I figure I got till next Fall to get it right. Looking for a location that offers some patterns.

Any photos of your finished product?

I would suggest buying some cheap cotton material and make several using that until you get good enough to move on to more expensive wool. Good luck. Be sure to post pics.  This is somewhat inspirational for me. I have been kicking around the idea of trying some sewing projects but geared toward pre-1840 renezvous clothing.

I have a navy colored blanket shirt made out of a wool blanket by a friend of mine about 30 years ago. I'll have to dig it out and take a picture.

You go to a Salvation Army etc. and get a pure wool blanket then wash it full hot water and dry it HOT with a couple pairs of old runners in with it.  When you take it out it'll be shrunk, thick and warm as well as a lot more wind proof....it's called "felting" in case you want to google it.  Then you can cut and sew it into anything yu want, booties, mittens, wool hats, or a very nice pullover.

I've made a shirt based on an 18th C shirt patern from an old wool military blanket.  I never tried to shoot a bow while wearing it.

I really like the design and features on the Boreal shirt from Lester River Bushcraft. Check them before building.

Try YouTube. My daughter learned a lot from there.
It's really simple. Just don't take those borderline shots. Tomorrow is another day.

I made this one from a $20 wool blanket I picked up at the local Woolrich store.
I didnt really have a pattern. I just took an old sweatshirt I had and made some measurements. I would do as others have mentioned. Make one out of some scrap material first. I thought this one would turn out huge because I added more than enough extra width and length to my measurements. It turned out that it barely fit..

dont forget, when working with lighter scrap fabric, and you get the fit right, when going to a heavier fabric, the pattern has to graded up( not just an inch added all round!!) to allow for the extra thickness.- proper grading is a proportional thing, with varying %ages in realtion to certian areas of the anatomy.if you really want a proper fit, that is.
we had a big clothing manufacturing concern(back in the old country!!) for 20 odd years, and i did all the pattern making and pattern grading.

and very well done, Gokart.
impressive for a first attempt. 10 years ago, i would have given you a job.

My wife made me one, last year have worn it two years now for deer season, I'll post pictures tonight. I love it she's planning a new slightly heavier one that hangs a little longer for my September elk trip.
Bowhunting is a passion, not an obsession. Its just hard for my wife to tell the difference sometimes.

I made this wool shirt jac, I don't like pullovers all that much. It's not rocket science to sew your own.........go for it
