Here are a couple of websites to look at:

This may not be about deer hides, but it's the same basic process:
 http://www.primitiveways.com/buffalo_hide.html

 http://www.braintan.com/
 http://www.nativetech.org/tanning/tantools.html
 http://www.site.uottawa.ca/~kavanagh/tanning/tanning1.html
 http://www.nativetech.org/tanning/index.html

I concentrated on brain tanning sites because there are no man-made chemicals involved in brain tanning, therefor no huge expenses. You can tan a hide in your basement or garage -- or the backyard.

I remembered Dad use to use a Belt, switch,2 by 4 ( CAUSE HE WAS A CARPENTER ) or any object within his reach.   :knothead:   Those were the good old days! I do know of a friend who is a taxadermist and can ask him if you want me to. God Bless! Keefers <")))><

For all you folks sight-seeing the National Mall in Washington, DC, be sure to visit the Native Americam Museum (a block from the Air & Space Museum, and just a easy stroll from the Capitol.) They have a great new exhibit on braintanning deerskin, with exhibits you can touch and a step by step display in an exhibit room dedicated to tanning leather. You can see how to make primitive tools for fleshing and scraping from cow leg bones. While you visit, you can also see hundreds of arrow heads, and other great stuff, plus they have the best cafeteria in the mall (if you like traditional food.)
