Glue on nocks and points don't seem to fit right?
« on: January 06, 2013, 07:13:00 PM »
I was wanting to know as I just got started making wood arrows. I got a test kit from Surewood and tappered both ends with a pencil sharpener type tool and there seems to be some slop when trying to fit them on. 11/32 shafts and same size tool, is this void supposed to be there. Kinda makes it hard to get points on straight. Thanks Joe.

You might have to shorten the taper a bit. Try trimming just a little off and see how they fit.

Are the points and nocks both 11/32?, pencil style taper tools are ok but Doug Fir is a harder type wood to taper with them(not a smooth taper kinda rough). Use sandpaper to smooth the taper out.
What kind of nock and heads are they?they should fit edge to edge with the shafts. Did you use the correct taper for the nock and the other for the point? The nock should be the short one(you may have to snip the tip of the taper if the nock is not flush.

I used the correct ends for each. The nocks are brand new Bohnings and the points are from 3 Rivers.New taper tool also. I did try to get them to fit better by sanding down the point of the taper (some by 1/8")but they still rocked back and forth. Arent both pieces supposed to mate together the full length of the taper with no void? Joe.

Yes, that's the theory, but the pencil sharpener type taper tools don't always do such a great job.  The big metal body type seem to do better than the little plastic ones.  I do all my tapers with a disk sander.

The disc sander rocks with the surewoods. My pencil sharpener type didn't!

Stay sharp, Kenny.

Disk sander on surewoods here too.  Does a much better job.
