Enough bow/arrow for elk?

Just wondering what minimum poundage/arrow/broadhead setup you guys/gals use for elk. I'm hoping to use a "new to me" 1966 bear grizzly, 51#@28". I have always used 2117 aluminum tipped with zwickey 2 blade heads. Where I hunt this poundage bow is legal, however, just wanted to dip into the vast knowledge pool of trad gangers.

what's the total weight of that 2117 and head ?

with my 51-52# longbow/recurve I elk hunted with, I was in the 550-600 gr total arrow weight range


your poundage will work, if your momentum is there

Not sure of the weight but it's a 29.5" long 2117 with the 2 blade zwickey.

That will work just fine Bernie. I would go with 2018's if it were me. Just think they would tune up and fly better. But the 2117's and a 2 blade head will do the job.

Bradlantz/snag....Thanks for the replies. Arrows tuned pretty good.  Fly like darts.  Just have to limit the range...typically shots are 20 - 25 max.  I like the ones inside 10yds best.

I just checked a 29 1/2" 2117 with a 2 blade Zwickey mounted on a standard aluminum broadhead adapter--568 grains. Should be plenty of arrow weight.  Get it really sharp and put it in the right place (easy to say, right?)

I took a bull in 2010 with a 48#@28 (I draw a little over 27") BW PSA III. My arrow was a trad only at 630 grains tipped with a 125 grain Magnus Stinger. I believe it is best to shoot as heavy as you can accurately when hunting elk. They are tough!

Your set up will do the job.

That's a perfect set up for elk as long as you file those Zwickey's up sharp and shoot straight.

Shoot low brutha... they leak a lot more when the hole is in the lower third of the kill zone.

I shoot 53-57 pounds with exactly the same weight. 568 grains of Woodsman tipped Heritage shafts. But i prefer 9" of razor going through the rib cage over the 5" a two blade gives you.

Snags advise about the 2018's is excellent. the thicker wall of the 2018 shaft makes a tougher aluminum shaft than the 2117....  The XX78's are good tough shafts too.

You will be fine.. if  you hit the soft spot... aim small.
