Ok tradgangers...which method does a better job of silencing the bowstring ? One or two sets of silencers and why ... especially for those who shoot 3 under

One or two, whatever works to silence the string, most can use a pair and be good. To many can slow it a bit.Start with a pair and see.

I like my fast flight bow with two, although one was pretty decent... One set of Black Widow Spiders, one set of Woolie Whispers. I feel like the Whispers made things plenty quiet, but the spiders seemed to deaden all remaining vibration & even quieter yet... My B50 string bow has just Woolie Whispers... Probably comes down to preference and bow dynamics.

I've never needed two sets with B50 string, but fast flight, yes I've done two or whatever it takes to queit it down

Interesting. . . I always used 2, THEN I spent time talking to a string maker who has done lots of research over the years (use to test for a large/popular bow company)- He told me one reason that we often see 2 silencers work is that we are slowing the string down, actually losing efficiency, which naturally quiets the bow down. His point: there are better solutions.

Out of the bows my friend and I have there's only one that has two sets of puffs. He put two sets are on a recurve to quite it down a bit more after shooting a lot of longbows. I went with a skinny string on my pch to get it closer to my chimera in sound. If two sets slow the speed it is marginal in my experience. But then again we're shooting 11-12 GPP arrows...so not the fastest setup either.

Just my opinion but, If you need more than one set of silencers, there's something not quite right. JMO.

What bow are you shooting, what string material do you have, how heavy is your arrow? To many variables to say 1 set or 2. On my old Wesley Special, a heavy wood arrow made this bow so quiet everyone shooting with me was in amazement.

Agree with Mike. Additionally, if it is a recurve, I would suggest one set and wrapping the ends of the string with wool yarn from the nock loops to where it last touches the limb. If the bow is noisy, you might try raising the brace height as well.

I like to cut one set of Catwhiskers in half and place them at 4 different spots on the string. Or I use the 4 spiders that come with Black Widow strings.

Start out with a well made bow and you should barely need one set of silencers. That said I use a half of a set of the Hush Puppies, thats all my Big Rivers need!

Whether or not silencers are needed or preferred is entirely subjective and left up to the individual... Each thing you add to the string will reduce energy being transferred to the arrow plain & simple. However the sound & vibration will be reduced with properly implemented silencers... How far you take it is to each his own :-) There are many variables in the equation- arrow weight & tune, string type, brace height, bow design & performance, etc....
