New Morrison ILF hunting bow
« on: January 08, 2013, 09:46:00 AM »
I'm in the process of ordering a new Morrison ILF recurve.  It will be 48-53lbs @ 27" with a Phenolic riser and cottonmouth skinned Max1 limbs.  I plan on hunting elk with it this fall, but will also hunt deer and turkeys back here in the east.

Here's my question, I'm still trying to decide on the riser length.  I have heard from a number of people who have shot all of Bob's ILF risers that the short 13" riser shoots great.  With C limbs that would give me a 56" bow.  This is the direction I am leaning right now.

I would love to hear thoughts on this setup. Thanks!

I would go with a 15" riser, with a 27" draw you would still be only 58" and still have lots of room in a blind or a tree stand, I have found longer is most times better. But that's just me! I have an Alum riser and longbow limbs from Bob at 46#....I think you'll be pleased.

I really like the super short MAX I's on a 17" riser (DAS). However, with his line of risers and limb combos you can't go wrong. What does Bob recommend? I'de go with his advice.

Bob was thinking the 13" riser with B or C Max1 limbs to make a 54" or 56" bow.  He actually said he really likes his personal hunting bow, a 13" riser and short limbs making a 52" bow.  I guess all the recommendations to go longer just have me a little nervous!

Get the longest bow that suits your needs, always smother drawing and shooting, less finger pinch and a little more accurate on those longer shots.  As your planning on hunting Elk, the terrain is usually more open, you will appreciate a longer bow. I would recommend a 15" Riser with D limbs for a 60" bow. The only time I would want a sorter bow, would be hunting out of a pop up ground blind, just to clear the roof. Either way, you can't loose, that's a seriously good set up. RW

I will be hunting turkey out of a pop up blind.  My initial thought before I got talking with Bob about shorter bows was 58", 15" riser with medium C limbs. At my 27" draw I would think that should be plenty smooth?

With the 13" riser and 'D' limbs, you would get the same size bow if using a 15" riser and 'c' limbs.  I like the idea of having the longer working limbs in a same size.

Roy, I just noticed your signature line.  You train dogs?  I am training a nice 2 year old CLM now and will be running him in Q's in 2013, hopefully he will be ready to compete in field trials by fall.

PAUL I WOULD STICK WITH THE B LIMBS ON A 13-15 INCH RISER THAT WAY YOUR 27IN DRAW WILL OPEN THE CURVES OF THE LIMBS TO GET THE BEST PERFORMANCE.

I tried the Super Shorts on a 17 inch riser and did not like it.  I have a 26 inch draw.  I ended up with the shorts on the 17 inch riser making it a 58 inch bow.

17 inch Phoenix riser and Max1 limbs.

And, it is smooooooth!!!!! and quick!!!!

I have a 13" Mini and ordered Medium (C) limbs for it. This will I understand make a 56" bow.  I am borrowing a set of Super Shorts with this riser at the moment and it is only a 52" bow. I haven't shot it yet because I don't have a 49" string. Allen at  LeftiesRus will remedy that by tomorrow I think.

I'm "concerned" that 56" is going to shorter than I want but I do have a 26" draw and I've received a lot of advice suggesting I will like it. If I don't I reckon I'll be in the market for some "long" limbs.

I handled a Trad Tech II today at the ATA Trade Show. It had Trad Tech limbs.  A very nice handling bow! It was a 17" riser I believe and limbs made it a 60" bow.

This is confusing. Thinking that maybe I should just get a 15" riser with C limbs to make a 58" bow, which kind of splits the difference here.  A shorter bow would be a benefit for me hunting, as I do a lot of turkey hunting and the last two mature bull elk I shot were in the thick timber a 4 yards and 12 yards.

HEY PAUL IF YOU LOOK AT BOBS DRAW LENGTH REFERENCE CHART OF HIS SIGHT YOU WILL SEE WHAT THE LENGTH RISER TO MAX 1 LIMB WILL BE TIP TO TIP AND ALSO MORE IMPORTANT MAX DRAW LENGTH. IF YOU ARE WANTING A 58"BOW YOU MAY WANT TO LOOK AT A 17" RISER AND B LIMBS WHICH ARE GOOD TO A 28" DRAW. IMO IF YOU SHOOT A LIMB THAT IS OPENING THE CURVE/CURL MORE AT YOUR DRAW LENGTH IT SHOULD PERFORM SLIGHTLY BETTER. I THINK SHOOTING A 15" RISER WITH C LIMBS THAT MAX OUT AT 29"DRAW YOU MIGHT BE LEAVING SOME PERFORMANCE ON THE TABLE DUE TO THE CURLS/CURVES OF THE LIMB NOT OPENING FULLY AT YOUR 27"DRAW. EITHER WHY YOU WILL BE HAPPY I HAVE 2 SETS OF HIS LIMBS AND THERE PERFORMANCE AND DRAW CYLCE ARE SECOND TO NONE I HAVE SHOT BEFORE. GOOD LUCK

I went with d limbs on a 17 inch riser. My 29+ draw just makes a 62 inch bow more comfortable. I would go with the combination that you normally shoot to get the most out of your bow.  You can always get a taller blind. I do not have a problem shooting my 62's out of a double bull or a hidden hunter.  Bob made me a great 60 inch bow and it was a little to tight , I went with a longer 64 inch long bow limbs and the performance was not the same. I am kind of worried but I heard good things about the max 1's

Well, here is the bow I ordered.  After taking all this into consideration and talking to Bob at great length, I decided on the 15" riser and C limbs, 58" bow.  Bob said that I shouldn't see any significant performance loss at my draw going between B and C limbs.  I want to thank everyone for all the replies, its been extremely helpful!!

This is a very nice looking rig!  Will you have pine cones on the grip?

I have a temporary set of Max 1 limbs (very early prototype) on a  13" mini that makes the bow only 52". I have a 26" draw and have NEVER shot a recurve shorter than 56" before.

I am very pleasantly surprised with the smoothness of the draw.  I'm used to 46# bows and this one is 52.5#.  There is no pinch.  I do notice an unusual amount of hand shock but maybe this is due to the "early limbs?

For your draw, I think you made the right choice. I am waiting on a metal Phoenix 17 inch riser.  Once I shoot it one time, I will know how it stands up to my old bow. It has a lot  to live up to.
