I remember the first morning in camp...gray and somber skies...a damp chill. We gathered for a group picture, and then watched Monty shoulder his frame pack and hike away upriver and into the wilderness. Bryan and I just looked at each other...and went hunting.

10 days later...seeing Monty float into our camp...his raft in tatters...missing some gear. He was soaked and pale from the cold. We helped him ashore and into camp as the sunset turned to dark. What an evening that was!

That is hunting on the edge . . .

Look forward to his talk at Kalamazoo.

I just read it and gotta say as much as I love a good adventure I think I would be very afraid of that river ride. Hell I was scared for him just reading it!

Jon,

We talked to Monty after his presentation.  It scared him dearly and deeply.  He got thru it all with Faith and help from above.  He said he is done on that river and I believe him!

This may have been a hunting trip, but it appears to be a fight for survival.

Monty is indeed working on his book....and the reason the story appears on the website as opposed to in the magazine is a timing thing.  Right now TBM (the print mag) is booked a couple years in advance with stories....as some of you know, they get a right of "first publication" of their stories when you sign the contract.   Monty did'nt want to wait so long, hence the story on the web.  In other words...this story will likely be in his book and he needed to fulfill those obligations to TBM.

I talked with Monty a week or so ago about all this, and he is moving forth in his efforts.  He just wants to make sure it is a "great" effort on his part to produce a great book for all of us.

Thanks guys for the heads up on Monty's up and coming book. I have always enjoyed reading his work and as a budding writer myself its always good to see someone getting it all down in book form. I'm a few years off (an adventures as well) from a book...

I heard this story in person, and Monty can tell a story. He told me about being up in Alaska once and ran out of food and was living on a carcass left by fellow hunters.

The Man sure walks by faith and is true testament for us all, but Jesus did say do not tempt the Lord Thy God...LOL!

Fantastic ! I admire his courage and his faith ! It takes a real man to face fears of that sort and still hang on to our faith ! God is always there, we are the ones who leave him, a lot of times in our darkest moments we try to handle dire situations on our own ! Well told and way to represent IMO !

My one regret is not getting a picture or video of Monty drifting down the final stretch of river towards our camp.

It was quite the scene...a tattered, overloaded raft that could barely float.  Monty was water-logged, cold and exhausted.  The palms on his hands were literally shredded flesh.

I was down to the river first and I remember yelling to Kevin in the tipi..."get down here, it's Monty and he's got a MOOSE!!"

I was sure happy to see him make it back safely and maybe my mental picture is the best one there is...
