unofficial resolution!
« on: January 17, 2013, 11:02:00 AM »
I decided early in this month to start saving for a hunt this year or for January or Febuary of next year. I'm thinking something low cost and see how it goes. I just now was thinking "This  is sort of a New Year's resolution!"

I've wanted to go to Shiloh Ranch forever. There's also Ray Hammond's. Something in Florida or Texas would be awful nice too. My ultimate hunt would be for moose in Newfoundland.

I turned 55 last Nov. I'd better get with the program!

That is great, I hope you have a dream hunt!

Ya' know, there are a lot of folks that would consider hunting in Indiana a dream hunt...

God bless,

Man, that moose hunt in Newfoundland sounds like a winner to me. I live in Maine where we have a lottery for moose permits. Sadly, I've not been drawn for one of those permits in the years I've applied. Still, I'll put my name in the hat in hopes of being drawn. A moose by recurve would be amazing. Hat's off to all of you guys who have done it.

Good luck on your hunt--hope you get to go.
Take care,
Jeff

You will probably need a strong back to help get a moose out.

Dream hunts are in the eye of the beholder. Hunting far away places for game that is unique to the area. Sometimes just being able to afford to take time off from work and stay home to hunt for a period of time is a dream. Good luck with your quest.

Thanks for the response guys! Any hunt where I have my entire time whether it be 3-4 days or an week would be a dream. Hunting with someone who has more knowledge and experience would be a dream.

I feel like I've put alot of leg work into hunting around home without much game taken. (Notice I didn't say "success".)

Here's another thought! I never had a mentor. I could save my money and  hire a famous traditional bowhunter to come and assess my hunting grounds and teach me how to hunt it so that I will do better right here at home!

Rob I will remember that offer!

I'd say being honest with yourself about your expectations is important. If taking home an animal is a priority then be sure to book a hunt with high success rates. If camp life is important as well as the social atmosphere, then be sure to book a hunt that delivers just that.

Sounds to me it's time to shoot something...just guessing?

You would be guessing right Stickflinger!

I would like to shoot something but the camp life is equally as important to me. I will defintely be trying to get a hunting partner or two for this trip.

I have always wanted to mix canoeing, camping and moose hunting into a single trip.  There are lots of places that can be done in Canada, for a price, but it would still be an adventure.  I have also advocated the moose drawing in Minnesota, be a traditional bowhunt. They could issue twice the tags or more, allow people to have more than a one time try, and perhaps even allow a few out of state tags. It would generate more funds, allow many more people to partake and open the way for a Boundary Waters bowhunting/canoe trip adventure.

Moose hunting trip, down river in a canoe... That is the way I like it! Small wall tent, wood stove, solo or with a friend, camp fire, good food... Life at its best!!

God luck on your future trip/resolution!!
Cheers

Good idea. Use the rest of the month to do research where to go and determine how much to put back each week. Start your savings in Febuary. Best wishes!

You won't regret it, regardless of how tough it is to arrange. I kept saying "Someday I want to go to Africa".  My wife, in her infinite wisdom, told me I was slowly running out of "someday's". We weren't really set up financially to do it, but we made it happen and I took my two sons with me. I will never forget that week. We had a great hunt, but had we been skunked, it would still have been the dream of a lifetime to spend a week hunting with the boys.

Thanks Billy! I can always count on you!

The hog hunts I've researched so far range from $400 for two days to $900 for five days. That is not including travel expenses or meals. The states are Oklahoma, Georgia, S.Carolina, Florida and Texas.

I will re-research the moose hunt next. It is Ironbound Outfitters that I looked into before.

Bona, I was 56 when I went on my first exotic(to me)hunt. It was an elk hunt in SW Colorado. I had dreamed of hunting elk for as long as I can remember but never thought it would come about. Well, dreams do happen and I got to enjoy 2 hunts to the San Juans of Colorado, six years apart. I never saw an elk on either hunt. I did get to hear a few bugles in the high country. I would consider both hunts to be successful if for no other reason than I got to go. I enjoyed every minute of each hunt. Even having to be hauled out on horseback due to a badly sprained foot.
If you never dream your dreams will never come true. Best of luck to you on this venture. Keep us posted on your progress.

Thank you Pat! That would be a dream hunt for me also, (except for the sprained foot thing).

I looked at the Ironbound Outfitters website and the moose hunt would be $6876 and is a 7 day hunt. Then of course there is the travel costs, hotel for a couple of nights and processing the moose I would get is .50/lb. All considered a pretty good price from what I've seen but a little harder to save up for (obviously).
