Western N.Y. bunnie hunters WANTED
« on: January 19, 2013, 01:23:00 PM »
Looking for anybody in the western part of our state looking to get together for some bunny hunting this winter.Thought it might be fun to get out and try to get some with our bows. I only have 2 problems, one is I don't own a Beagle, and two where I live in the southern tier not many rabbits at all.So if you are willing to share your spots and or dog with fellow Trad gangers for some fun lets try to put this thing together.

Would be fun if there were more rabbits. Darn coyotes have em rather scarce. I saw one while hunting this entire season in Cuba ny. I guess the trick would be to find a huntable population somewhere. I've seen a rabbit hunting club on the east edge of Olean NY. Never looked into it.

Iv' been thinking the same thing Longrifle.I haven't hunted rabbits much in years. I think you have an excellent Idea. I bet we could find enough places to hunt some bunnies. Dog or no dog, I say we do it. I used to shoot afew on sunny days in the winter, or just go threw and stomp the brush piles.Get a few of us together and move some rabbits. You can count me in. Steuben counties where I'm at.

Lets try to keep this post fresh for a few days gentlemen to see if we can get the interest up.And I don't mind hunting without a dog, stomping brush piles is my specialty.

Plenty of bunnies around us, problem is they are all nocturnal. Rare to see one here, but when it snows, there are tracks all over the yard come morning.

yup, always have rabbits in our yard at night, during the day its so hard to find them, and when I do its in the thickest stuff where no shots are available.

Bunnies are nocturnal by nature and usually always stick to the heaviest, impenetrable cover. This is half the fun hunting them with stick bows. Chapstick is the most important bunny hunting accessory I can think of. Youll smile and laugh so much, without it, your lips will be a cracked bloody mess by the time its over. Have fun fellas and take pics. I wish my brother in Rochester could get together with some of you fellas in the future.

So far there is some interest but,we still need some good bunny cover. I don't mind at all playing '' beagle boy'' but we need a good spot.

I am in Caledonia and my friend is in Silver Springs and we both have dogs.  We would be interested in a hunt if someone has an area with a good population of rabbits.

Oh how I wish we still had open rabbit country here in southern NY but those never ending subdivisions seem to like smallgame coutry the best.  I have always hunted rabbits with a model 12 16gauge that I got as a kid but this topic suggests what may be the ticket in these more crowded areas.

Del:"Oh how I wish we still had open rabbit country here in southern NY but those never ending subdivisions seem to like smallgame coutry the best"

I heard that brother...went up to my uncle's place in West Saugerties..1st time I'd been there in years...couldn't believe the changes to the area...all of our old small game cover was gone..we used to have a huge thicket only 200 yds from the house..prime rabbit country.thickest cover you can imagine.took many in there with dad's old Charles Harvan side by side..even more with our old singel shot marlin .22...  All that is developed now and there's houses everywhere...

There is some state park land near me but a permit is needed, free and can be gotten at Letchworth state park administration building. Like nashoba said we have dogs and a lot of arrows also.

Can't hunt them in the state park but can on the state land at Silver Lake with a permit.
