Light wood/FOC

As a rule I have usually sought the heaviest wood shaft I could for hunting, even going so far as to dip and re-dip trying to get to a  desired weight. With a 27” draw I would come up short of my desired weight using cedar.
    I’m now rethinking this and going to look for light cedars and add the weight forward something like a 400 grain arrow and a 160 ++ head should give me good weight and FOC for my 57# recurve.
  I have alot of 70-75 and 80-85 acme cedars ,which should give me plenty of spine. I also like to taper these shafts down,giving more FOC.
  Has anyone started going this route?

I went this way this year by accident.  I just picked up a bow (Morrison Cheyenne) from JDS3 and none of my arrows shot good out of it.  I tried some heavier spined cedars I had and keep adding point weight til they flew great.  I ended up with 400 grain finished cedars with a 160 grain tip.  I just got some STOS 160's from Braveheart Archery and am gonna try them today.  Good luck

I went from cedar to ASH for a heavyer arrow since my bow is a old shrew and is about 160fps. My bow & I both like the heavy weight.

Some of the guys use Watco Danish oil to soak the shafts in.  Its not only a shaft sealer and stain but it soaks in the wood.  It also adds lots of weight to the shafts.  I've not used it yet but there was a thread a week or so ago about it.

I went to carbon and never looked back. I still love wood but for high FOC and good arrow weight, nothing beats carbon. Shawn

East cost thats about what I'm going to end up with a 400 grain finished arrow in fact I just put my first coat of sealer on them.
  I have been shooting 135 magnus and just ordered some stos also 160.

  I have gone the danish oil way to add weight to the shaft but my thinking now is to get the lightest shaft I can and add the weight to the front end with a heavy broadhead.
  A 560 grain arrow is still 560 no matter were the weight is but with a light arrow and heavy head I should be able to get more FOC.
  Shawn I actually shot an aluminum arrow I think it was a 2018 and I was surprised how well it flew. Thats what got me to thinking,why did that fly so  well and I think it has more to do with FOC than spine or straightness. I'm sure the carbons fly great but... something about hunting with wood for me. Thanks for the responces

I just got the STOS from Braveheart archery and they flew great on the 400 grain cedars.  Were easy to get razor sharp too!  I think you will like them.
