Best carbon shaft insert glue for easy removal
« on: February 05, 2013, 12:05:00 PM »
Wanting to fine tune my carbon shafts by slowly removing ¼ from tip end. What is the best insert glue to use so you can remove the insert, cut and then re-install several times? I tried hot melt but I am having trouble heating the field point to release the insert before damaging carbon shaft.

I use the hot melt from Big Jim. Works great and never had an insert pull out. Just make sure you prep the inside of your shafts with denatured alcohol first.

Hot melt will soften enough to remove the insert in boiling water, and boiling water is not hot enough to damage the shaft. I quit using hot melt for carbon shafts because it didn't seem to hold up very well for me, but I never had a problem removing the inserts. Just use a little dab if you're experimenting.

I have some really big 225 gr tips I use to insert and remove inserts. I hold it with the arrow above the flame and the tip of the tip in the flame. The heat radiates up more slowly into the insert and I hold onto the tip with pliers and put rotational force onto the shaft till I fill it break free then remove from heat. Another trick I have used was to put a pot on the stove and with a tip installed in the insert I prop the arrow in the pan and heat for a while and check occasionally to see if the glue bond has released.

Forget the glue and wrap the insert with pipe tape or teflon tape and shoot.  Caution this works well shooting into bag type targets.

To remove, grab the end with a pair of pliers, adjust shaft length, insert and start over.

I also do like old goat...screw in a tip and heat that..not the shaft itself.

Another fan of Big Jim's hot melt.  But better yet - when tuning and cutting a little bit off just cut from the nock end and leave the point insert alone.

Yes, what Pete McMiller said above, only use cling wrap for the nock and you can remove it easily.

I have been having really good luck with the Ferr L Tite blue low temp. It holds the insert in real well but I can heat my field point while it is in the arrow for just about 2 seconds with a torch and pull the insert and point out with pliers.

I pull the nock off and insert a drill bit in the shaft then swing the shaft like a whip and the bit will slide forward hitting the insert. After a couple of swings the insert comes out with no damage, be carefull as it really comes out with the bit. I use epoxy never had good luck with any hot melt....Tim

Kimsha Quik Stick glue is AWESOME! I'm thinking that's the same glue Big Jim uses for his shafts as well. As long as you take the time to properly prep shafts this glue is FANTASTIC!

I actually broke a shaft trying to remove it from a tree stump after missing a ground squirrel and the shaft broke at the back of the point. I had to get a knife to dig out the BH becaue the glue wouldn't give up the BH. It seems to work great in cold conditions as well.

No reason to glue and re-glue when you're bare shaft tuning.

I use a Walmart bag.  Just push the insert-with field point installed-in with the bag over it. Then rip the bag off.

Use pliers to pull the point/insert out when you need to trim the shaft.

Saran wrap or plastic garbage bag should work just as well.

If you are using Easton Axis with a brass insert. I have been using low heat glue sticks and I don't even clean the inside of the shaft. Not one of them have come out in 3 years. To remove heat threads of the point and screw back in. Turn with pliers and pull out.
