Thinking on switching arrows to aluminum
« on: February 15, 2013, 10:09:00 AM »
The topic on shooting aluminum arrows got me thinking and I would like to try them(only  carbons so far) My draw is 27 and my recurves are 54-55 @28 with a 175 grn head(vpas) what xx75s would be best to try @ 28-29 inches?

I'd suggest that 2016s will put you in the ball park and you can tune from there.

I shoot the same weight and same draw length. 2117's work perfectly for me cut 28.5". I use 125/135/160 grain broadheads..and my arrows are swagged.

My titan ILF with 50-55# dryad epics limbs tuned up great with 2117 shafts. cant remember how short I had to cut them though.  my draw is around 27.5".  Shot great but didnt like teh risk of bending

I just came in from trying old arrows from my go to bucket(100s of old arrows) tryed all  w175grn tips and found 2013s 2018s 2114 and the war horse 2117s. (But no 2016s darn!) The best were 2018 30 inch(had 2) and 1@ 29  the 30 seemed to fly great till I tryed to bare shaft(way left,rt handed, but grouped with my carbons)2013s@28 took off like rockets but were way light, noisy bow. the 2117 full length looked good but at 29 inch hit the risor with a clang(stiff?)and went left.I have lots of 2117s  so I will revisit them. so looking for 2016s to try and maybe 2018s hmmmm... so meny arrows so little time what fun!!!

Huge fan of Arrow Dynamic Lites.  I have mine cut to 30", 5 inch feathers, 100 grain brass insert and 225 heads.  They shoot bullet hole paper tuning my bows from 45 lbs to 51.  Expensive but very durable. My previous arrows were Cabelas carbons that lasted a decade.

Tryed 2013s @281/2 wow they really zipped out of the bow (great grouping)but bare shaft poorly, 2118@30 flew great but seem to bare shaft stiff(all w 175 grn fldpnts) so 2116? HHHmmmm.... need to try 2114? Going to need to find 2-3 2016s, near full length to play with.

I would suggest a 2016 or 2114. 2117 are .400 deflection and I think that would be way too stiff. I shoot 2018 in my 60# and the deflection on those is .460.

Agree with bigbad.  You will find that 2016 and 2114 are really close in spine.  I use them pretty much interchangeably.

2114s or 2115s for extra weight/durability.

I shoot 2117's at my 27" draw, cut 28.5" from my 52# Fedora, 55# Longbow, 57# Groves and 58# T/D.

I use 125/135/160 grain broad heads and arrow flight is flawless. 5" Parabolic feathers and one doz has 5.5" HB Shields.

I tried 2114's for a while, but bent them so easy if they hit anything. They just weren't durable enough for me. I do shoot and like aluminum though.
I would've taken better care of myself,if I'd known I was gonna live this long!

I draw just a tick under 28 inches. I like 2020's with 225 grains up front from my 58# longbow.
Just one more step please!

I would think that 2117 with a 175 point , my set is 62 lb hill longbow @ 26 arrows 27 @ bop with 175 up front . I shoot wood 80% of the time , but never go on a hunting trip with out my 2117 as backup they all ways fly the same .

I would agree with the 2117 or 2018 with that heavy a tip. 2016's and 2114's work well at 50 pounds but with a 100 gr tip. With a 2017 or 2018 you can start with it full length and then trim the length of a bare shaft back until you get it to fly straight with the 175 gr tip.

If you can find your size in a SuperSlam (XX78) or an X7, I would use these instead.  They are a harder alloy and onlly cost a few dollars more but are much more durable and bend resistant.

My draw length is a touch over 28" and I haven't found a trad bow yet wearing a skinny string that will shoot a 2016.  I've tried them down to #44 and they always show really weak.  I too would suggest a 2018, maybe a 2117.
