losing inserts and points???
« on: February 21, 2013, 12:20:00 PM »
Hi Guys,
This is a new problem for me, I've just got myself some Gold Tip 5575 Traditionals, I'm using the standard G/T inserts, with 200grn points, cut at 28.5" and shooting from a 53# Black Douglas Recurve. I'm using heat glue stick to secure the insert, as I have done for years, yet now my insert is detaching, with my point attached....... I'm now 3 x points and inserts down, any idea why this is happening??? .... surely my points aren't to heavy!!

clean the shafts out with alcohol or acetone before installing your inserts. that will help if not eliminate your problem altogether.

Yea. I have too. If you clean them with Iso. and roughen up the surface that will fix your problem.   BILL

Dave, the problem is the hotmelt that you are using. I have always shot bemans and never had a problem, when I tried GT the inserts pulled out constantly.

You have to use the low temperature stuff that stays sticky. Big Jim has the best hotmelt...

I roughen with a rifle bore brush then clean with the 91% alcohol and use loctite super glue gel and although I have had a couple get loose from hitting something hard and have to pull them and reglue, I have never had one come all the way out....Shawn

Best thing is a rat tail file and light work then hot melt.  A good bore brush will work, but the file will for sure do it no question.  I use Ferr-L-Tite and no problems.  I don't even bother to clean after the file.  No other cleaning product or method with hot melt glue worked consistently.

Funny this topic came up. I just received a couple doz arrows from a archery company. I was shooting 6 arrows over the weekend and lost 4 inserts/points. That's a first for me in 20+ yrs. I was going to contact the company to ask if their arrow boys forgot the glue them that day. So should I call them b/c I'm sure by the time I get around to shooting all those arrows a few times I'll lose more

I have always shot Beaman ICS Bowhunter and never had a problem. I thought I would try some Gold tip 3555's. I glued them with hot melt glue that has always worked on the Beamans and lost the tips and inserts after afew shots. Tried again by ruffing up inside of shaft with 22 caliber brass brush and glued again. They lasted about 1/2 hour of shooting before they both pulled out again. Reglued again with epoxy and will wait 24 hours. If these pull out I am done with Gold tips.
