best carbon...
« on: February 25, 2013, 08:30:00 PM »
I have a 60" 45#@28" (i draw 26, been advised that im actually pulling around 40 due to short draw)
Planning on 28" arrows off the shelf...
What would be a great preforming carbon and tip combo for 3D?

Get yourself some Gold Tip ultralight 600's.  Cut them to 29", even though you only draw to 25". Get both 50 grain and 75 grain points (they're cheap).  Shoot with both until you decide which you like best.

I use on my 45 lbs at 29 inches (my draw) hybrid longbow with an 6 strands SBD string the following:

GT traditional 1535
Full lengh, so a BOP of 30,5
Standard GT nock and insert of 11.5 grains each
a 100 grains fieldtip
5 inch helical feathers
9 inch crown dip and cresting, which adds 10 grains app.

total arrow weight: 387 which gives me a GPP of 8.6

I am still plaing around with gluing a small screw in the nock, adding 17 grains to the back of the arrow. This stiffens the spine a bit and raises my GPP to 9.

I bareshafted this set-up and shot perfect groups on 20 yards.
It gives me a FOC of 9.3. Without screw around the 11.

( Psss:I believe Big Jim still has some GT 1535 blems, best deal you can get, don't tell anybody...  :)  )
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that string! [/i]

I shoot Easton Axis 600 with a 175gr point, 75 gr. brass insert, 4" feathers and a cap wrap. I have a 26 3/4" draw. My arrows are cut to 27" and I have perfect arrow flight and they shoot flat. My bow is 44#@27" I do shoot them off a bear weather rest. I use the same set up for hunting.

Try Carbon Express Heritage. I don't know if you could get by with the 150 or not,but the 90 would probably work.

26 1/2" draw, I use GT's 1535 cut to 28" - 29", 50 gr. brass insert, 100-175 gr. field point, and 125 gr. to 260 gr. ( stock insert for this set up ) broad head. I shoot the field set up for 3-D out of all my bows with pretty good accuracy using the 100-125 gr. points, I presently shoot it out of a Mariah Thermal 54 @ 26 1/2"

I don't think you'll have a problem with 125's, but if you do, you can always drop to 100's.

In my above post, I mentioned shooting GT 1535's, I am going to switch to GT3555's with 100 gr. brass inserts and 4" parabolic feathers with 125-145 gr. field points, I am now thinking they will shoot better (smoother) out of the Mariah Thermal, and I could add more point weight for hunting.

for 3d Iuse my TT titan w/ 45# carbon wood limbs set 4 turns from bottomed out. my arrow is a goldtip trad 1535 cut to around 28"  i believe with 3 5" shield cut feathers, the standard insert and a 100gr tip.  this combo shoot awesome for me.  For fun I like to shoot from the pro stakes and didnt do to bad with this at denton hill.

if you want a lighter weight arrow carbon tech cheetas are suppose to be really good
- Hunterbow 58"  47# @26"
-bear kodiak 60"  45# at 28"

Try the Arrow Dynamics Trad light series shafts. I use the regular trads on all my bows over 55#. You won't find an easier shaft to get to shoot from your bows.

I believe Craig offers the best advice. I would think at 28"s and a 40# recurve at your draw, you will need a lot of point weight even with a .600 spine. If you let us know what recurve I can get ya very close. Actually need more info to give a close answer. I would definitely say you will need at least 190-200 grains of point weight even with a high performance recurve that is cut past center. I can shoot .600 spine out of my Border Hex-5s cut to 29.5"s and with 190 grain point weight and they are 46#s at my 28.5" draw. Pm me and I can send ya one or two too play with before you go and spend money and find you cannot get the .500s to fly. .500 spine full length and I bet dollars to donuts you would need 275 or more up front to get even decent flight. Heritage 75. Bare shaft test with the tip weight desired and trim accordingly.
