Roger, my old Baker is over 30 yrs old, so ive got a couple of suggestions.
Go with the heavier canvas for durability, boat shrunk, sunforger, fire resistant as well, with a stove pipe jack. Mine is old but if i was looking for a new one check out David Ellis canvas products they have some great Bakers.

I have a Panther Baker that I have had for years and it has served me well. I have used it as my main camp and also as a cook tent while using my tipi. I like them because the many uses if you get the fly out and buy the extra canvas for the sides.

But I'd take a look at Kevin's tents over at Seek Outside.

Unless you're camping out of a car, weight and bulk are an issue.

Year ago i got a Baker from Beckel canvas, Egyptian sail canvas. I got it with the screen front and one back window. It the pack with all of the poles and stakes and ropes, plus the weight of the number 3 dultuh pack, the weight comes to 43 pounds.  It has been on many Canadian canoe trips.  A few years back I got one of theri new ones that was made from the same stuff that boat covers are made, it leaked like a siv.  What I like about the Baker designis that it can be set up a variety of ways to work any where.  Many times we would just run a couple of taut ropes and just put rocks down instead driving stakes, set up like that it will never blow down, even with the uprights and rocks on the bottom ropes it is still bomb proof.  One tip get lots of parachute cord and use it where ever you need it.

I have a Baker from Frost River and a wall tent from Beckel.  Both are excellent products. Keep in mind that neither is a pack tent.  Even a fairly small baker style will weigh 25#-35# depending on the features(sewn in floor, or not, side wings, or not, mosquito netting, or not) in a medium weight canvas.

I had a smaller Beckel made Baker style several years ago made out of a synthetic material. Much lighter than canvas, but just a little smaller than I wanted at the time. It, too, leaked a bit so I sold it.The fella I sold it to gave it a scotch guard treatment and it apparently no longer leakes. I tried to buy it back, but he wouldn't sell it to me. (LOL)  For canoe camping, or camping off the tailgate of your truck, a canvas baker is the ticket.

Bakers really do look multi use, especially with attached rain flys and wings. One could configure many different ways depending on conditions.

Curious, how do they stand up in heavier winds?

Roger, I know you are a retro kinda guy, and 20# of wet stinky canvas has a certain romance to it, but if you plan to haul it in on your back at some point, this may be worth a look:

Hey Steve - That looks like an awesome version of a Whelen lean-to. You are right, if I'm hauling it on my back, thats the way to go. REI sells an awesome version of a rubberized, grommeted, SUPER light tarp that I used in Idaho last year. Folded up with pre-cut parachute cord it would fit in a large cargo pocket.

Ha, Jerry...  just try and get it back !  Its a decent tent.  A few tweaks and I like it just fine.  If I recall it has a 7x7 footprint (plus the overhang, if I use it as such).  Works great for one and pretty good for two.  With the flap down off of poles and staked right to the ground it holds up well against normal windy days.  Haven't had it out in a 50 mph plus blow.  I am guessing I would be looking for it across the valley.

I like being able to sleep in the tent but see outside.  This one has a floor and skeeter net.

Hey Chuck, I thought you might be along.  I still like the size and weight of that tent. Just about perfect for one-person canoe and car camping, I think.  The one is have now is made of pretty heavy cotton canvas and about a foot taller. Has a floor, and mosquito netting s well. Still easy to set up, and versatile, but you wouldn't want to carry it very far.
