Hill Gang Hunt 2014 - Planning Thread
« on: March 03, 2013, 07:33:00 AM »
Starting this thread up in the hopes that all of us Hill style shooters can get together and map out a location and date for the next gathering.

There've been some good suggestions already like Texas javelina, Louisiana deer etc...

What does everyone think? Where should we go and what should hunt?

I suggested Louisiana, but would definitely be in for Texas.

both sound good to me will definatley make the next one.  What about arkansa?  might be able to hunt deer, hogs and squirrel with little bowfishing.  would suggest he in illinois but really expensive for out of state tags.

I'm going to start putting away a few $$$ every week just in case it's javelina in Texas. I'd love to try and make it to that hunt.

I forgot to mention that I could organize whitetails up here in Canada. The travel and austere conditions may deter people but I could pretty much guarantee we wouldn't see another soul in the woods as well as some good small game and grouse opportunities while you're out chasing bucks in true wilderness.

Ross could you elaborate on some details, sounds very interesting.
Is there public hunting land?
Primitive camping?
What is your preferable time of year?
I guess what is the basic setup behind your thoughts of chasing the Great Ca Wilderness Buck?  :)   Thanks, Jim

I think that's a great suggestion Ross, Iv' never been to Canada and I'm only some 2 1/2 hours away. I take it we wouldn't have to hire a guide as a guessed of your citizenship?   :dunno:

Yea I have heard of some good public land for deer in LA and I think the outa state tags are cheap.  Pretty much for Javis we will have to pay.  But the license for texas is only $40 for hogs and javis and other small game.

My brother is javalina hunting this coming weekend at a ranch south of San Antonio.  He is going to get me as much info about the ranch.  I know he is paying $125 a day for a 3 day hunt.

If small game isnt out of the question, there are several states with large populations of rabbits, possibly a bunny round up. Lots of action, as well as possible successes. All game is big game when you do it Hill style.

Guys,
I'll throw this out here, but not sure that anyone would be interested in it.
There are thousands upon thousands of public acres in Virginia.  I'm thinking national forest.
I could help with the High Knob area of Wise and Scott Counties, or the huge amount of public land in Bath Co., Virginia.
Timing wise, though, would need to be sometime in October.  Deer, turkey, bear, and squirrels would all be in-season at that time.
Just a head's up, Virginia has that silly no hunting on Sunday law.
I would do whatever needed to help.  I intend to make the next one.  If anyone wants to consider  Virginia further, I'll check on non-resident fees.

I like Moleman's Idea. If we could find a real good rabbit hide, and I mean real good rabbit population, the shooting could be fast and furious. Whats more fun than lots of shooting potential?Possibly a deer, rabbit combo.

Dave, since im kind of a small game junkie, i couldnt help but throw that out there. I love chasing tree rats, and even though i come home empty handed a lot, i still get plenty of shooting opps., and thats kinda what i was thinking about for everyone...plenty of shooting opps. Besides that, pan fried rabbit in a big ole C.I skillet with gravy, or stew in a dutch oven is hard to beat.

Right on Paul, I agree 100%. Hey, I wrote a piece about our hunting in Georgia on the 2013 HG hog hunt thread. Also a lengthy piece about my hog hunting and the trad gang at Ocmulgee. Check it out, if you haven't already. I think you;ll like it.   :bigsmyl:
