Author Topic: It's funny how we just keep learning new stuff! BIG BOAR wasthe result of this lesson  (Read 2500 times)

Last Monday night, I shot the biggest boar (weight wise) I have ever shot!      :scared:

Now I am sitting there pretty worried that mayby I did not put the arrow in the right place. I knew he could not be dead that quick!

When I began to track, I instantly remembered how much I used to love using the string at night. There was no blood at the shot sight. I followed the string to the exact location the pig had entered the brush (only about 10yds) with still no blood found. As soon as he hit the brush, the arrow broke off. There was only about 4" of shaft and the broadhead missing with only a few inches of blood on the shaft that I found. Seeing this made me really think that I had hit him high in the shield. At this point I still  had not seen a drop of blood.

I followed the string into the brush and, sure enough, it had broken off just a few feet into the brush.

A few feet was all I needed though! I lined up where the string was going and started walking the trail out. About 10yds from the end of the string I saw the first blood. It was just a tiny drop and I was pretty sure this hog was not going to be found. I kept following though. I will not quit if I still have blood to follow! For about 30 more yds, it was very hard to follow and the drops were very small. Then it started getting better, and easier to follow. After about 30 more yds of pretty easy trailing, my hog lay dead on the trail.      :goldtooth:

I could not believe how big he was. I also could not believe how good the shot was! Low enough to be under the shield, just above the elbow. It feels really good to know all the practice pays off. This shot was in pitch dark and through netting! He bottomed out my 200# scale and I estimate he was about 210#. He had some pretty good cutters too!

Here are the hero pics:

I really believe that the string tracker saved me on this pig. Because of the lack of blood, I believe that there is as good a chance I would not have found him as there was that I would have found him (at least till the buzzards led me to him). Before I read Fireboss's thread, I never would have ever tried this shot. So, thanks Fireboss, for teaching me something new and reinforcing my pig hunting arsenal! I can see a few more nighttime hog hunts in the near future. And you can bet the string tracker will be on my bow!

Sorry this got so long winded!

Great story - congrats.

I have this love-hate thing with string trackers...unfounded really as I have not used one that much.  I just think that they will cause a problem.

Great hog Bisch!

I agree with Izzy.  I think he's bigger than 210!
