Refinishing a PAINTED Griffin - WOW purdy wood (Pic heavy!)
« on: March 15, 2013, 08:13:00 PM »
WOW!! Check out this Griffin I bought on the classifieds here. It had been dipped and painted. I bought it thinking of using it as a 'beater' bow or stripping it and reselling it. Since I just bought two take-down bows I need to sell it. I'll post it on the classifieds once I get a finish reapplied. I went to the local Wally world and bought a spray on stripper. Since the bow was spray painted I ended up with this graffiti cleaner. Figured it would work better than normal paint strippers.

Was I ever pleased with the results. These 2 pics show it partially stripped with some of the spray paint still on the handle.

Check out the wood grain in this beauty!! Total stripping took less than half an hour!!

Not real sure what the black dot is. Of course, this is normally hidden under the leather handle wrap.

It doesn't go all the way through, as seen here. ??

Not sure what finish I'll use. I'm thinking about a satin wipe-on poly like I use on my arrows.

It came with one of those rubber slip on handle grips that I would include with the bow when I sell it but will not put it back on. That wood is just TOO purdy to cover up.

I don't know what the wood is. I bought the bow from floodman and maybe he'll pipe in and remind me what they are.

There was only 1 SMALL issue on the bow. There is a slight depression right at the "8" of 50# @ 28" and for some reason the 8 came off when I stripped it. It WAS there. Before totally stripping it with the spray-on I lightly sanded the paint off to read the bow's specs.

You could add the 8 back on before you apply the finish. Hobby shops have white pens. Super glue could fill the depression. Nice looking bow.
If it's in your way, move it.

It's all about personal preference. floodman had his reasons and that's great. This is one of the reasons I decided to buy it. Curiosity. I wanted to see what was under it. It really is beautiful.

I agree with Dave.  Nice job bringing it back.

Nice for sure...I owned and hunted elk with that same bow before it got dipped/painted.
It is a smooth shooter for its weight / length.

You have a nice find there!

Too bad I can't hit "Like" on a post.
I'd love to see a wall shot of those bows, flood.
