Need help on POC arrow selection
« on: March 20, 2013, 08:04:00 PM »
After some age and back injury issues, my draw length has significantly decreased. I was pulling a tad over 27 inches, but am now pulling about 26 inches. I have never paid attention to FOC and fancy, technological approaches to arrow selection, but I am interested. I need to review my arrow selection.

What would your arrow spec recommendations be if setting up for the following bow? I will be shooting POC wood. Assume I know nothing about woodies (which is not so very far from the truth, even though I have shot them for a number of years). The primary quarry is whitetail deer in the Georgia woods out to 25 yards or so from both elevated stands and ground level. Also, I have been shooting Magnus two blade BH and like them, but again, I am open to suggestion.

Bow is a 68" Hill Wesley Special rated at 65# draw@ 28" with FF string. As stated, I pull almost 26 " exactly.

Thanks for any advice, as I have had some trouble shooting my original selection.

At 26 inches, you're probably drawing about 60#.  Fast flite kicks up the spine requirement a bit.  60-65# cut to 27 inches BOP should work well.

I draw 25 1/2" and shoot 50-55 spine with a 125 grn. head out of my 50 lbs bows.

Sorry didn't mean to hit the reply button. Anyway as I was saying: That 50 lbs. is at my draw length.the arrow is 26 1/2" to back of point. In retrospect, If your shooting 60 lbs. at your actual draw length, and using a 125 grn head with a cut length of 27" then a spine of 60-65 should be about perfect. This is all stated with a FOC of about 10%.

Now if you want a higher FOC with a wood shaft( in this case POC ) then a heavier point weight is called for. Using the 27" arrow and a 200 grn point should require a spine of 70-75 for a 60 pound pull weight. Results will very with different bows and shooters ect, but basically a raise of 5 lbs. of spine for every 35 to 40 grn.. additional point weight.

 Hope this helps you out.

55-59 lb cut 28" for a 125 gr point.  For a 27" arrow drop 5 lb spine or go up to 160-190 gr point weight.  You may well find the 160 shoot better than the 125 gr points even at 28" BOP.  I find I like the way the heavier points fly and would at least try some 160 and 190 grain field points.  Points are cheap and there are lots of good heads available incl Magnus I at 160 gr.

Good luck and enjoy the journey.

What Rick said, you never know, but I believe 60-65 that someone else mentioned earlier would be a little stiff in a Hill at your draw weight.

Is your Wesley actually 65@28 with a fast flight? Sometimes they are the stated weight with a B50, but a couple of pounds heavier with the fast flight. I am guessing that your bow would be 58 or 59 pounds at 26". That is about one pound stiffer than my very fast half Breed from a blank a 1/8 from center shelf. That bow likes 50-53 pound tapered poc 27" bop with 135 grain points and 55-60 tapered poc 27"bop with 160 grains. I draw about 26.25".

Okay, I've got enough different arrows around so that I can test several of these suggestions. This ought to be fun. Thanks for the input. Let's shake the tree and see what falls out. Thanks for the input.

Well, I started some testing and have been a bit surprised. I have some 65 - 70# POC arrows in 23/64 " diameter. They are 30.5 " long to BOP with 125 grain points, and they are flying quite well! At least they are this week's winner. Still more work to do though,

There are still some outside issues in play. One is that they are not the most well put together arrows in that they range in weight from 480 to 648 grains averaging slightly over 550 grains per arrow. This may slightly affect consistency of performance.

Secondly, I can now shoot the 65# bow without the shoulder pain, but I am not yet handling that draw weight well. I am still noticeably over bowed. Hopefully, I can work back into that weight reasonably soon.  Then I will see if this arrow set still seems okay.  Also, I will check out 11/32 " shafts since they seem to be more readily available hereabouts.

This experimentation is fun.

Sounds about right Sam.  The extra arrow length softens the spine by 4-5 lb per inch.  Braveheart Archery should have the perfect Surewood Fir shafts for you.
