Four Dog Stove - WOW
« on: April 13, 2013, 12:44:00 PM »
I got a 4 dog stove yesterday and all I can say is wow.  It's the actual 4 dog model I plan to use in my 12'x12' Montana Canvas spike tent.  This will be warm for sure!

The quality of the build is amazing.  It really is a quality piece of gear.  I've got it set up in the backyard curing the paint.

I didn't get any pictures while it was in the yard but there are some good YouTube videos of it.

This is going to be way warm in my 12x12 pyramid.  A 3 dog version may be on order soon!  You may see this 4 dog, used once to cure the paint, in the classifieds.

I'm overly impressed by the quality of construction.  I just can't say that enough.

The extra heat will be great from a cold damp day out chasing animals.

The four dog will be way too much for a 12 x 12.  Heck we run a five dog model in our 16x20 with 5 ft walls and have to have the door open part way.

Brian,
We may need to talk.  I've got a 5m bell tent that might need a stove.  Just need to find an appropriate stove jack.

It's sitting in my garage with your name on it.  You'll save all the shipping and then some.

Ok, I'll stop the hard sell now!  LOL

I figured its easier to make a small fire in a big stove rather than the other way around.  However, I think this will be too warm no matter what just due to the large surface area.  I haven't been able to find any into on the net about small fires in a large firebox.  I think it could lead to draft problems as well.  Anybody got experience with that?

The three dog is three inches shorter in width and has a 2 cf fire box vs the 2.5 cf of the four dog.  I'm thinking the two dog would be plenty down to about 20 degrees in my tent but as deathmaster says I think the little larger three dog would help when it's damp.

Wingnut, since you've got a four dog, what do you think?

I use a 2-Dog in my 10x15' and its plenty till the end of October. Any later than that and I would want the 3-Dog. I chose the smaller one because we camp out of a boat and its easier to hump in and out of the boat.  Bob

Thanks, that's great info.  I've used my tent down to the mid teens so far and would expect some night to hit zero.  I'd like to be prepared for worst case.

We love ours.  Never got cold down below zero a number of times.  Still laying on top of the cots in my longjohns reading a book.

FWIW I use a breakdown(packable) Simms Sportsman that is approx. 11x11x22 in the same tent and it heats it, or dries wet clothes no matter how cold. The difference is the fire/coals won't last nearly as long(maybe 3 hrs w/pine) because it is not airtight and thin sheetmetal.
I always thought the best stove for that tent would be the bigger 3 Dog titanium model but have not coughed up the cash yet. Ouch! The 3 dog model is featured better than some other steel brands because of the baffle and damper and leg design. The weight(less packable) is the only drawback. You should be able to get about 6+ hours of coals w/pine out of the 3 Dog and it should work great in that tent. No hardwood here.
I agree the 4 Dog is too big as I used to have a similar size steel stove of another brand that was better in a 14 x 16 wall tent with 5 foot walls and sold it.

I just got a 14 x16 Davis wall tent and was leaning towards the four dog stove as well. However I may have to reconsider and go with the three dog.

From what I see of the four dog, it would perfect in a 14x16 wall tent.

My 4 Dog arrived on Friday as well.  I'll be using it in my 14x16 Davis wall tent.  I agree with you on the quality, it is definately a well built stove.

I've got a Nuway propane stove that has a chimney through the stove jack and runs off a large propane tank.  It works great unless you're camping in the teens.  At those temps, it'll take it from 15 degrees to about 40 in the tent.  It's great but if I were staying for a week I'd rather not have to run through that much propane.
