Did a little scouting today (pics)
« on: August 26, 2007, 10:36:00 PM »
Got out today and did a little scouting in the area I plan to hunt this year. I also remembered to bring the camera this time. It's a 4000+ acre state natural area called Spread Eagle Barrens, so it's prolly gonna take me some time to figure out the best place to set up. These pics are from a spot called "Lepage's Creek Overlook".

This spot looks like it might be a natural funnel. It's hard to tell from the pic, but it's a pretty steep slope down to the stand of pines. I need to climb down and investigate this area a little further for deer sign.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Goodbye Shiner you were always a good dog.

Started to find a little sign along the main trail.

No acorns on the oaks again this year. It might be due to the drought or the "pruning" bugs that lop off the ends of the oak branches. I'm not really sure, but maybe the black cherry trees (that are everywhere around here) will be the key to finding the deer here. I'm not sure if they eat them, but I figure they probably do.Anybody know for sure?

On a side note; I don't know exactly what is making these dens, but there's quite a few of them dug into the hillside. Coyotes? Foxes? Badgers?

They might have something to do with this:

It's hard to tell from the picture, but there is deer hair in there. Yotes I would imagine. I hear them from time to time late at night.

Anyway, I'll keep going out there till I figure it out, cause I'm not used to finding a good spot to hunt in an area this large.I really to get a better camera! I coulda got a shot of a Bald Eagle if I'd had a good zoom lens.   :knothead:

Definitly coyote poop! Funny story(don't want to hijack your thread. I had a doe get spooked last year and couldn't figure out what was happening. I was up real high and didn't think she could smell me. I went to get down at noon and found coyote poop all over my tree steps and on my boots. That stuff smells awefull!!!!!!  :scared:
Just one more step please!

Some dude with a stick and string chasing things.
