Arrow help please
« on: April 18, 2013, 08:11:00 PM »
Here's my specs. Can you tell me which arrows would be best.
I'm currently shooting a 58" RER XR three piece recurve. It's 53# at 28. My draw length is 27".
I now use a 3555 Gold Tip Traditional cut to 30 1/2" from throat of nock to insert.
I use standard GT nocks and inserts and 3-4" feathers.
I use 125 grain tips and I think the finished arrow weighs around 412 grns.
I would like to go with more weight for more penetration.
Can I use the same arrows?
Do I change inserts to brass?
Where do you suggest I start?
What kind of weight, points, foc etc. do you suggest?
They seem to fly OK, but like Shawn Leonard pointed out in a recent post...maybe they can be improved a lot by bareshaft testing, which I never did.
Thank you very much ahead of time.

I am shooting 60 inch XR

30 1/4 gt 3555s

145 up front standard insert they paper tune bulletholes

One thing you could cut some length and add more weight

These bows shoot some stiff arrows well the other idea would be a heritage 150 it will add weight

I'd cut your arrow down and add tip weight.

I shoot the 3555's or Heritage 90's cut to 29" with a 175 grain tip out of bows from 45 to 50 pounds at your draw length and they fly fine.

Here's your huckleberry.

I would start by cutting 1/2" off.

This is assuming your current setup is tuned.

I have owned and shot RERs for the last 8 years. I had an XR, almost the exact same set-up as yours. If you draw 27"s you can cut them to 29.5"s and shoot 175-190 grains of point weight and that set-up should be perfect  for you. If you cut them to 28.5"s you could go to 225 grains of point weight and get great flight. Shawn

I didn't realize you were still shooting those javelins!lol You get great arrow flight as is(and have killed some nice hogs with it) but a little more weight couldn't hurt.
Like Shawn said, I'll bet that would be about perfect. Those VPA's 175 grain and a 50 grain insert outa do it.
