Scout'n & stump'n
« on: April 20, 2013, 08:48:00 PM »
The 2400 acre Erwin wildlife management area border comes almost up to my front door. Today I would once again take a walk across the road with Wesley Special in hand, and my new wonderful back quiver made for me by Bud B. Turkey scouting was my objective, and why not stump shoot along the way.I walked NW up the hill, checking out likely Turkey holds, until I got to the largest of the three ponds on the WMA.

I came out of the woods here, just below the dam. About a mile and a half up the hill.

I crawled up this dam face, wanting to get a pic or two of the Geese I was hearing.

I headed further up the hill to the top of the hill, and walked due east along the access road. I meant to take a pic from up top, but got side tracked by a local resident. We had a good conversation, although I wish I had taken a pic because it's a beutiful view. So I walked to the end of the ridge and started back down the south east face. My plan was to continue scouting toward my blind I made two weeks ago.I came to this small pond. I had to check it out because I hadn't seen it before.

Had some pretty cool upturned tree roots

There were a couple of wood ducks on this pond that flew right over my head. I couldn't get them in the lens fast enough!

The east side of the hill is a big section, with fire breaks going east and west, north and south.

This is as I started down the hill heading east. The fire break with my ground blind run off this one.

Managed to collect some more coyote scat from this FB and else where today. Enough to fill a large sandwich baggy. I always store up for trapping season.

I finally got to the fire break with the ground blind. As I tried to get a pic of the horizon, I looked down the hill to see two Deer on the bench beside my blind.

These Deer were 100 yds. from me, but only 15 yds. from my blind.

Nice size Doe with yearling

I dubbed this blind" The Birds Nest " at least that's what my step daughter said it looked like   ike.

Well I didn't find a lot of Turkey sign today. Some of the only sign I found was right below the Birds nest. Hopefully the weather will warm up and the birds will strt getting a little more active. Here's to hoping.

Jeff, I feel very, very fortunate to live were i do. I own 75 acres on top of the hill behind my house. It is surrounded on two sides by another 600 acres of solid woods known as the Erwin mountain state forest. with the WMA accross the road I have access to over 3000 acres of prime hunting land right outside my door. God's country, thank you Father, thank you.

Nice day!!
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.
