Productive Weekend Shed Huntin
« on: April 29, 2013, 02:36:00 AM »
Had friday off. After my yearly Physical, where the Doc says lose a few pounds, get more exercise, yada, yada, yada, my best bud Parker and I head to the woods.
We found one decent shed after only 10 mins in a small woodlot. After another two hours we found this old one in an open pasture

Another hour and with no more we went home both of us pooped.
It's really simple. Just don't take those borderline shots. Tomorrow is another day.

Saturday we were out for about 5 hours and all Parker found was this.

Just a leg bone from a deer. When I send him out to "Find a Bone". He just brings back any bone related item. He gets praised up for them all.

It's been a looong winter, but in the past few days it heated up and it seemed like overnite the snow was gone.

Hmmm, guess I did that wrong!

Oh well.
This afternoon we went to a new area where i noticed a lot of activity most of the winter in a oat field that didn't get harvested before it snowed. I figured there had to be some antlers in there. After some door knocking as to who owned it we found out that he wasn't home.

We asked 5 different neighbors and two let us go. The first place was 40 acres and the owner said that we probably wouldn't find much as he walked his fields and fence line all the time. I was thinking as from past experience that people for the most part have no clue about what kind of Deer are on their place and where to look for sheds.

He let us drive behind the Barn closer to the field edge. As soon as I saw the field I figured he may be right as there was only some bush in each corner. About an acre total. So I turned and went in a small 3 acre section just to our left. Parker immediately was on the hunt for squirrels and rabbits. Not 5 mins into our walk I see this about 30 feet in front of me.

Look close.

I stood still and let Parker retrieve it. After a treat and taking a closer look I realized that a piece of the skull was attached. Bummer!

While I was waiting for him to pick it up I scanned around for the match as I often do once I find one.

Did you see it behind the first one?
Under the log just to the left of the two saplings.

I just stayed put and told him to "Find the Bone". It took him a bit and he stepped right over it once. He finally dug it out of the Duff and brought it over. The two halves almost fit perfectly. There is a bit of a gap I think because of the time laying out and moisture?

Another hour of searching didn't turn up any more. We tried one other spot near by but it was only about 10 acres and we didn't find anything.

After a bite to eat and a bit of a rest we went out for a couple more hours closer to home. No luck

My daughter took a few pix while I held them together.

It rained pretty good as the Sun set. That should take care of the rest of the snow. We must be a month behind. I'm hoping to get out some more before it greens up too much. Thanks for looking.

Great find!
Nice work with your dog as well. Good idea to reward him for any and all "bone" retrievals.

Looks like a fantastic time, and your shed partner looks like mine!! 10 y/I yellow lab who prefers the couch over getting too cold or too hot now a days but he still loves a good spring and fall romp in the woods

That's a nice set Gun. Too bad he isn't still on the hoof.
