Arrow speed with R/D bow
« on: August 28, 2007, 04:08:00 AM »
Hi All,

I'm not really a speed junky but more into accuracy but a guy wanted to know the arrow speed of the last R/D bow I made (Elauwit) so I chrono’ed it. (I posted this bow as: My new R/D bow)
Bow: Pull weight ~50# @28", B50 flemish string with silencers. Total arrow weight 490 gr, 5" LW shield fletching with 125 gr. field point.
Average speed result after 20 shots: 169.9 fps. Are these reasonable figures?

Sounds good to me. You might go with a FF string prvided the tips will handle it and gain a few more fps.

Pulled to 28" or less, shot with a glove or tab, with a "hunting" string, that's great speed.

Sounds pretty good to me as well, and I really like the contours and grip on that bow!!

V Archer how do I get one of your bows left handed over here. Or just get one   :D   You sure are making some sweet looking bows. And seeing this speedy also, those are reasonable FPS's. From all the differant bows I have tested. BW's,Acadian,Bob Lee,Hoyt,Blacktail,Bears,Martins,Adcock 1pc & Zipper so I have shot a couple. With my arrow & bow weights in the same league,as yours.

Very nice work

Very good speed at 10 gpp and drawn to 28"s. I bet it would be close to 190 at 9gpp. and drawn to 30"s with a FF string. Shawn

Dang that is a nice looking bow and the numbers are sweet, especially with dacron.  However, don't you dare tell me that the beautiful archery range is in your backyard!!!!!  :notworthy:

Gosh, I don't know.  I think you can do better. Why don't you hide that bow at my house and try to build a better one  :D  .. I'll pay the shipping so you won't be out too much.  :goldtooth:

V,

I think that is good solid speed, pretty much where the TD R/D bow I built lies.  It was based off the Binghams plan but with 1 inch shorter riser and each limb 1 1/2" shorter.  Close to 64".

Here are my numbers with a B50 and a FF string:

El Cheapo, the Phoenix longbow - 7 1/16" brace ht
---------------Weight-------B-50------FF
Wood arrow-----560gr--------163.2-----167.0
GoldTip 125----425gr--------180.8-----187.1
GoldTip 145----445gr------------------181.4

These were all 9-12 arrow averages for each number.  Pulled to about 29".  I don't have a good scale, but I'm guessing about 51# at that length.  Didn't use a clicker for drawlenght consistency either.  When I really over drew the bow to close to 30" with FF, I got 195.5 fps ave with a 9 arrow bunch.  Fun, ain't it?!?!  Can't wait to chase deer with it in 2 weeks!  Steve

Hi Beachbowhunter,

It's a very nice archery range but not in my home backyard. It's only 8 miles away from where I live. So compared to USA standards you could say "backyard".
